What about a bunny? They'd require less attention than a dog, but more than a cat, can be house trained, and live 8-10 years on average. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_rabbit

I am considering this myself. Kat is allergic to cats (go figure), our complex doesn't allow dogs, like you I am wary of getting a pet that will live less than a half decade(leaving out pretty much all rodents), and would like an animal I can pet and play with (which rules out reptiles/spiders/fish). They seem to be the best combo of something that doesn't require constant attention like a dog, but can be a solitary animal, but not so aloof as some cats can be. The only real caveat of having them I suppose would be feeding them, as it looks like its a bit more expensive than cats/dogs if you don't have ready access to cheap greens.
