Because of recent local government cuts to the bus service I've been arriving late (up to 9.30 am) for work and the having to leave at 4.45 pm to catch the last bus (leaves at 5.10 pm) and am currently under review by my employers for three months. I'm on a flexi system which my basic week should be 37. It hasn't been because of road works and I ( Read more... )

Does your company have a human resources department? If so, I would write down the facts of your journey by bus and by foot, your attempts to ride share and ask them for suggestions. It may mean cutting your weekly hours to fit within the time frame the buses run. Certainly a financial cost, but a lesser one than losing your job altogether. And yes, employers these days can fire you for pretty much any reason or no reason at all. I'd also call the transit company and see if they have a ride-share matching program.

You absolutely cannot get in trouble for getting a lunch break for 30 minutes in the United States. It's the law. The other stuff I don't know, they could hold it against you. Was the ride-sharing spread through work? Asking for a carpool and explain the situation?

It does seem like you are going to have to have a serious sit-down talk with either HR or your direct manager/schedule maker. Arriving late everyday is absolutely reason enough to fire you, even if it's something you can't control. So, since it seems the transportation timetable can't change (is there an earlier bus you could take?), the work schedule will have to.

Best of luck, and be sure to acquire a copy of the bus schedule to show management when you sit down to talk to them.

Ask H.R. or management or co-workers if you don't know...

Is there an employees bulletin board where people can post carpooling requests [and for sale items etc}?
Or a company employees newsletter that will allow people to do the same?

If not, perhaps you can help to start one up.
I suspect your best bet will be within the company itself.

Best wishes!

Thank you for your comments. Basically I've already sat down with my Team Manager and our boss to review the situation in three months time. If it means a reduction of hours and/or reduction in salary I'm prepared to face this demon. However, what I don't like it when other colleagues make inane comments and give me dirty looks when I arrive late.

I've complained to the council who subsidised the service and ask them if they could possibly reinstate the first and last bus back. It wouldn't affect the buses in between and the drivers would have more time to rest too.

I'll let you know the outcome of this in April.
