The History

Oct 30, 2000 17:48

Nezumi grew up in a tribe that lived in the forest, a group of people everybody calls the Forest People in the novels. Not too much is known about them, other than they worshipped a powerful being that was named Elyurias. Though her name was not made Elyurias by the people themselves and by a man who found out about her. Nezumi is a descendent of the ‘singers’, people who would speak and sing to Elyurias to speak with her. She usually takes the form of a bee and every year lays eggs so a new bee will become Elyurias. The Forest People would offer her a God’s Bed, basically an animal brain for her to lay her eggs in so she wouldn’t use humans. In return for offering her a safe area for her eggs, she would protect the forest.

Discovering the power this creature held, a man went to the officials of No.6 about it. Wanting the power and lands for themselves, they burned down the town the people lived in making this the Mao Massacre. Nezumi’s family was murdered and the rest of his tribe was too. An old woman pulled him to safety and she raised him herself. This woman taught him to not show his emotions to anybody and to never sigh because it showed weakness. The old woman found a library storage room and they lived there together. This is what began Nezumi’s love of reading. When Nezumi turned 10, him and the woman tried to infiltrate the Correctional Facility, hoping to take revenge against the mayor for the murder of their people. The woman herself was killed and Nezumi barely escaped. He finds a cave where the old man who discovered Elyurias and his people. He raises him up, gives him the name Nezumi, and when he was 12 tells him to return to the outside world. He gives him a knife and tells him to find his own path in life. But he asks Nezumi to go into the main center of No.6, Moon Drop. He was captured, but managed to escape with a shot in his shoulder and a VC chip in him, a chip put into criminals to track their activity.

No.6’s plot begins here on Shion’s birthday as Nezumi escapes to the Chronos, the more elite area where gifted people are kept in No.6. Things are more high quality here and it’s a life of luxury in this part. There’s heavy rain and Nezumi, shot and malnourished, collapses near Shion’s house. He is about to give up when he hears Shion’s scream. He takes it as a sign to keep living since Shion leaves his window open and the security alarms off. Shion takes him in and takes care of him, knowing that the city considers Nezumi a fugitive now. Nezumi is fed, his wound taken care of, and given shelter for the night. Nezumi considers this all a miracle and it changes his life. Before the morning he disappears and Shion loses his awards for housing a criminal.

Again, not too much is known what happens in the four years before things pick up. All that is known is that Nezumi went to live in the Western District again in the library storage room, gets a job in theater, and enough supplies to build robotic mice to infiltrate No.6 and keep an eye over Shion. Nezumi hadn’t forgotten Shion’s kind deed and knew that No.6 would probably do something because Shion was a genius and a perfect scapegoat.

Two men die from parasitic bees and No.6 decides to blame Shion for the deaths. Nezumi springs into action and saves Shion. He brings him to the Western District. There it’s discovered that a parasitic bee is in Shion’s neck and it starts to try to mature. With Shion’s urging, Nezumi quickly cuts open the blister where the bee is and takes out the larvae. T second time Nezumi saves his life. For a few days, Shion is unable to stay awake for long and when Shion wakes up, he realizes that his hair has been drained of color and has red scars encircling his body. Nezumi comforts him as best as he can and drives Shion to keep living. Shion then realizes they need to save No.6 from these bees and Nezumi disagrees, excited to see something finally having the ability to bring down the city that killed his people and destroyed his life.

During this time, Nezumi had sent a letter with one of his mice to Shion’s mother to tell her Shion was safe and alive. Karan, the mother, sends a letter back and tells them to go to “Arnd LK-3000 Latch bl.3f.”. Nezumi looks into it, getting the information from Inukaishi, a girl who uses her dogs to get information and items from No.6, explains that the building is probably from the town that the Western District was before No.6 used it as a garbage dump basically. A newspaper was run there and from the source, gives the information about Rikiga, an ex reporter. Then No.6 had been less fishy, but when they became more strict on who came into the city and who went out, Rikiga grew suspicious. Once the officials of No.6 realized he was suspicious, he was banned from the city. Rikiga is now a publisher of a porn magazine and prostitute dealer. He suggests Nezumi become a prostitute and Shion freaks, attacking Rikiga. Nezumi pulls him off and suggests they go.

Nezumi gets another message from Karan and this time is telling him that Safu, Shion’s childhood friend and the girl in love with him, has been taken by No.6’s Security Bureau. Nezumi knows that if Shion finds out about his friend, he’ll charge in and try to save her and effectively get himself killed. Realizing that he can’t stand to have Shion be killed, he pockets the message and doesn’t tell Shion as he decides to take care of it himself.

Nezumi sees Inukaishi about her finding out information about the Correctional Facility, knowing that she smuggles goods from it from some janitors and trades it into the black market in the Western District. He pays her two gold and at first she turns down the job, knowing it’s too dangerous if Nezumi is paying so much for it. With some manipulation he finally gets her to agree to the job and he pays her an entire pouch of gold to ensure results. He tells her to tell nobody about this in hopes of Shion not finding out.

Unfortunately Shion finds out when he finds Safu’s coat. Finding out that the coat was bought from Inukaishi, he asks her where it came from. She tells him the Correctional Facility and he figures Safu must have been taken and wants to save her. Inukaishi realizes the entire thing is about Shion and helping him. She goes to Nezumi and warns him that Shion knows and that she also knows Nezumi has grown to care about him. Inukaishi uses her dogs to attack Nezumi and laughs, trying to show him that he’s only human and also has his weaknesses. The fight is broken up when Shion shows up, Nezumi’s mouse having gone to him to get him to come for Nezumi. Inukaishi says she heard a rumor that weird stuff is going on in No.6 so she wants to help Nezumi now.

At their place, Shion treats a wound from a dog biting Nezumi and Nezumi gets on his case about coming to save him, considering he came with no weapon and the Western District is dangerous and could have easily been killed or hurt. They fight for a bit and then when things calm down, Shion thanks Nezumi for making him learn about himself and kisses him. He tells Nezumi it’s a good-night kiss and says he has to wake up early to take care of Inukaishi’s dogs. Nezumi cries when Shion leaves, knowing that Shion had lied to him and was planning to leave.

Shion sneaks out early to go save Safu and Nezumi follows after him. Upset that he was lied to and that Shion was about to go risk his life, Nezumi angrily slaps Shion and kicks him in the stomach. As they fight, Nezumi demands that Shion never lie to him and ’look down on him by lying’ again and when Shion promises he won’t, Nezumi lays off. He explains he knows something disturbing is happening in No.6 and disorder is happening both inside No.6 and outside. Shion realizes it has to do with the Correctional Facility and Nezumi admits he knew all along about Safu, telling him he has a plan to infiltrate and they need to stay calm. This is about saving someone and so it has to be done correctly. Shion slaps Nezumi for lying to him as well and they both decide to work together.

Nezumi is able to rope Rikiga into the infiltration plot. They try to figure out how to get inside without getting killed until Nezumi realizes the only way to go inside is to get captured themselves from a man-hunt, an event No.6 does on the Western District to ‘clean it up’. In other words, No.6 kills a lot of people in the Western District and then captures the ones who turn themselves in. Nezumi plans to have him and Shion be captured.

They decide to get information from Rikiga’s client Fura, a high ranking government official of No.6. Rikiga takes him to Inukaishi’s place, under the guise that there is a special prostitute waiting for him there. Nezumi tortures Fura for information and they don’t get much information this way. It isn’t until Shion takes care of the man, they get information. Fura tells them the layout of the facility and that a new section had been built.

Back at home, Nezumi faints and begins to dream of trees everywhere, insects buzzing, and someone singing. He hears a voice call his real name and it teaches him a song that will help him ‘survive’. He wakes up healthy and it has nothing to do with the parasitic bees. When Shion worries over him and manages to put his hand on a pressure point that Nezumi didn’t dodge, he begins to realize maybe he doesn’t know Shion as well as he thought and that maybe he doesn’t actually know much about anything as well either.

They go to Inukaishi’s and there Nezumi faints again, hearing the singing voice once again. The dream doesn’t last long though and Nezumi wakes up quickly. When they go to the market, the man hunt begins. Nezumi and Shion are able to stay safe by hiding until they allow themselves to get captured. Some groups are picked out and taken aside for unknown reasons, but Nezumi and Shion’s group are taken into an elevator. Nezumi holds Shion and warns him to hold on tight and to never let go. The floor falls out from under them and everybody falls. They land on a pile of bodies, a mass amount of dead and half-alive bodies. Nezumi gets him and Shion to safety and then takes to a small room where they can rest for a short while.

When they go back to the pile, it’s grown much larger now and they can climb up it. They go down to a corridor and drop down from the facility and climb this rocky wall to get to the cave where Nezumi had lived for a short while. There a man named Scorpion tells Nezumi that he was not allowed to come back and tries to kill Nezumi until Shion steps in, trying to kill Scorpion. Nezumi explains he needs to see the ‘old man’ and they go off to see him before Nezumi tells Shion to remain himself.

They arrive to another area of the cave and people are living here.  Scorpion attacks and ties them both up, wanting to kill Shion because he senses something ‘demonic’ about him. Nezumi gets free and keeps Scorpion at knifepoint and the old man comes into the conversation. He tells Nezumi he was not supposed to come back and he needed to live a free life. Nezumi explains that as long as No.6 stands, he can never be free. When Nezumi faints again, the old man explains everything. About Elyurias and No.6. He explains he was banished because when No.6 committed the Mao Massacre, he was horrified and against it. The old man gives Shion a computer chip, explaining everything about his research is on there.

Nezumi and Shion leave when they get a message from Inukaishi and Rikiga that everything is ready for them to infiltrate, as they are now inside the facility as well. They leave the cave and take a path back to the facility, where a worker has made things disorderly in the facility so Nezumi and Shion can get inside from the front. In No.6, chaos has broken out and suddenly people are dying.

The goal is to get to the top of the facility because Shion thinks that’s where Safu is being held. As they go, Nezumi has a realization that he was wrong about calling Shion weak and that he’s actually more strong than he gave him credit for. They knock down two guys and steal their lab coats which have authentication cards in them. In the facility, people are freaking out. They manage to find a secret ladder they can use, but accidentally trip the alarms. They run into some soldiers, but Nezumi outsmarts them, shooting them in areas to disable them. Shion by this time has been grazed by a bullet at his calf.

They run into a higher up and Nezumi takes a hostage, but the higher up kills the hostage before he shoots Nezumi in the shoulder and foot. He aims for his chest, but Shion comes to Nezumi’s rescue and murders the man in cold blood, angry that he had hurt Nezumi. Shion gets upset and Nezumi calms him down, though he realizes this is all his fault because saving Safu was only a front for him. He used Shion to infiltrate and create cracks in No.6 so it could be brought down. He remarks he brought Shion into his ‘battle of revenge’ and it was wrong, but there’s nothing they can do now so Nezumi pushes them to keep going so they don’t die.

The alarms and security in the place isn’t acting right and they seem to realize it’s as if they’re being guided to the top of the facility. An empty elevator comes to them and starts to take them right to the top as they make this realization. They get to their stop and there is Safu standing before them. Nezumi realizes something is wrong right away, but Shion doesn’t. Nezumi questions Safu, asking if she was the one that guided them here. She explains that she doesn’t have that ability, but it was Elyurias. She takes them to the main computer, the one that helps controls everything in the facility along with another called Grandmother. Safu explains the Correctional Facility is just a place to do experiments on the human body.

Safu explains that her wish is to destroy Mother and that is also Elyurias’ will. But Elyurias can’t destroy it because it requires ‘human will’, meaning that Elyurias is definitely not human. Shion finally realizes that Safu no longer ’exists’ and she is now only projecting an image, using Mother’s functions. Nezumi explains he thought that it had been a trap, but realized it was actually Safu projecting this image and not the computer itself.

Nezumi destroys Mother and Safu gives them three minutes to escape before everything blows up. Shion wants to stay, not ready to admit that his friend is gone and Nezumi forces him to come along as they leave down an elevator. The place blows up and Shion gets angry, claiming that Nezumi didn’t care about Safu and only used her for his own selfish wishes. He says he did use her and Shion before he gets shot, taking a bullet that was meant for Shion.

Shion finds a medical room to treat him, but the shot is close to the heart and he’ll die in two hours if he doesn’t get the proper care. Inukaishi and Rikiga are waiting for them and Shion explains Nezumi needs to get to a hospital. There are none in the Western District and so they go inside No.6 to a doctor that is a customer of Shion’s mother’s bakery. The doctor immediately does surgery and says that Nezumi will live, he just needs rest. During this time, No.6 has really fell into chaos now. There are riots and the people have basically decided to overturn the people in charge. Elyurias has shown herself  and the officials aren’t sure what to do at all now.

Nezumi wakes up and immediately tells everybody there’s danger coming. A ‘peace unit’ comes and kills everybody downstairs. Nezumi and the gang are okay since they hid upstairs. The doctor is barely alive and says he had been holding revolutionaries in his basement so that’s why everybody was shot. Shion explains everything that’s going on and the reason why everybody is suddenly dying in No.6 is because Elyurias had to lay her eggs. People in No.6 were healthier so that’s why they were chosen and people in the Western District are safe.

Nezumi and Shion follow the crowd to the city hall and then to Moon Drop as they use the balcony for Nezumi to call for Elyurias with the song. She comes forth and he begins to talk to her. Everybody’s really confused why there’s a giant bee flying above them. Nezumi asks Elyurias to give humans one more chance because he wants to see the world that Shion will create. She asks him if he still hates No.6 and Nezumi explains that No.6 has already been destroyed, but if another city like it would appear he would easily try to crush that one too. Elyurias says she will gives humans one more chance and disappears.

After this, Nezumi wishes Shion luck and says he’ll be leaving. Shion cries and asks for him not to go, but Nezumi answers that they are incompatible. When Shion keeps crying, Nezumi kisses him and tells him it’s a kiss of oath and that he’ll come back to Shion one day. The epilogue is three years later and shows that Nezumi has still not returned.
