Title: Hypothesis
Rating: T
Characters: Ezio/Leonardo, Rosa
Summary: Yet another meme fill. Ezio is hopelessly in love with Leonardo, and Leonardo is oblivious.
“Ah, Ezio, how may I be of service? And Rosa too! This is a surprise. Now, what can I do for you today?”
A faint smirk appeared on Ezio’s face as he slowly produced a codex page. Leonardo beamed, hugging the assassin tightly before taking the page.
“You found another one!” he exclaimed excitedly, looking up from the translation he had already begun to look at his two guests. Strangely enough, Ezio’s face looked oddly flushed. Rosa reached out and patted him on the arm, apparently trying to reassure him. “Ezio? Are you feeling quite alright?”
“Si,” Ezio replied quickly, the flush deepening. Leonardo frowned slightly.
“You don’t look quite yourself,” he mused, stepping out from behind his bench and examining Ezio closely. After a few seconds, he wasn’t really seeing Ezio, just another subject. Muttering to himself, he ran off a list of the symptoms. Gently (vaguely remembering the subject was rather skittish) he pressed his palm to Ezio’s forehead, trying to gauge his temperature. He noted how his brown eyes widened, briefly darting to one side (and was that a giggle he heard?) before locking on his face.
“Skin’s warm,” he muttered to himself. “Seems disoriented, too.”
There was another giggling noise, and this time Leonardo looked. Rosa was still standing to one side, both hands covering her mouth as she tried not to laugh. Though her efforts were surely admirable, they were also quite futile. Leonardo frowned slightly at the distraction.
“It isn’t very nice to laugh at Ezio because he’s ill,” Leonardo said, frowning slightly. Really, he’d thought Rosa was a better friend than that.
“I’m not ill,” Ezio muttered, still flushing. Confused, Leonardo stared at him, his head tilting slightly to one side.
“Not ill? But...” Leonardo trailed off before laughing suddenly. Pulling Ezio into a hug, he clapped him twice on the back. Beaming, he stated the - rather obvious, he thought now - conclusion he had reached. “Ah! How silly of me. You must be in love.”
Ezio nodded, his cheeks now a brilliant shade of red. There was a small glimmer in his eyes Leonardo couldn’t quite place, and he stood a little straighter than before.
“Yes, yes,” Leonardo said happily, pleased to have solved the puzzle. “It’s obvious, really. You’re blushing for one, and considering the amount of time you spend in brothels, my friend, that says something. You’re distracted, you’ve got a strange look on your face - and now you’re grinning. Definitely love.” He clapped his hands together, positively beaming. This was so exciting. “So. Tell me everything. Who’s the lucky lady?”
Ezio mumbled something unintelligible, shifting from foot to foot and glancing at Rosa. The thief seemed to have given up on her attempts to keep from laughing and was now openly clutching her sides in mirth. That, of course, was enough information for Leonardo’s lightening quick mind to put two and two together.
“Ah. So the two of you are together!”
Throwing one hand against his work bench for support, Rosa doubled over with laughter. Ezio muttered something else, looking oddly exasperated. A small frown settled on Leonardo’s face. He was obviously missing something. Ezio and Rosa, he reasoned, had come to visit him together. It couldn’t just be for the codex page, as Ezio could have done that alone. The same went for telling him about their blossoming relationship - it wouldn’t take both of them. That meant they wanted his assistance with something, which meant...
“You aren’t pregnant, are you?” he asked Rosa, looking at her incredulously. He bent over slightly, peering at her belly to see if she was showing yet. Pregnancy had always fascinated him. As such, he knew the stages quite well. Rosa must be quite early, since he couldn’t see any sign of a bump, but then how would the two of them know? Rosa had let out another ear-piercing shriek of mirth (she was obviously going to be no use), so he looked over at Ezio for confirmation. The assassin had the strangest look Leonardo had yet to see. His eyes were fixed on Leonardo, almost pleading him to understand. If Leonardo didn’t know better, he’d think Ezio didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“Rosa isn’t pregnant. I don’t love her.”
“Oh.”
Leonardo blinked. He cast a glance over at Rosa, who was still laughing. It was obviously a mutual feeling, then. That was good. Unrequited love was never easy to deal with.
“Well then?” he asked finally. “Who is it, then?”
Ezio muttered something that Leonardo couldn’t quite catch: he leaned in slightly, asking the assassin to repeat himself. There was a pause before Ezio shook his head, a friendly smile appearing on his face.
“It is nothing, friend. Now, about that codex page I brought you...”
