[For Remy]

All afternoon, Nate had been turning over how to present the idea of Brad an himself as married couple to Remy. On the surface, it didn't seem that much of an issue, simply a matter of vows exchanged, a note on record, changing very little about the everyday workings of their lives. But as a married person and as a person who had just proposed to ( Read more... )

It had been a long day sitting in at the clinic, though more like long in the sense that I'd dealt with a papercut and a parrot bite, and that was all. I didn't have anything better to do besides peruse whatever journal articles the bookshelf deigned to provide on neuron function and small-motor tasks--lately I'd been taking it less as mockery and more as a sign that I should be more proactive.

Maybe that was partly to piss the damn thing off.

I smiled at Nate as I came in the room, set the JAMA collection on the table with an audible thud, and went to go change my shirt. Even the slight walk had made me sticky. "Gorgeous weather we're having," I called, wryly.

Nate follows her, wandering to the door of their bedroom and lingering in the doorway to watch her change. "When you have a minute, I've got something I need to talk to you about," he says, just like that, because Nate doesn't believe in false pretenses and he doesn't believe in putting things off.

That made me pause, look back over my shoulder at him and instantly shift to faintly wary. "Okay," I said, brows furrowing in confusion, then turned back to pull on the new t-shirt and straighten it, before I faced him again, skeptical.

"What's going on?"

"I asked Brad to marry me."

That's the whole thing, right there, and he doesn't say anything else, at least not yet. It's a lot to process without him following with a lot of explanations or excuses. Nate is not remotely sorry that he asked Brad, but the last thing he wants is to make this difficult for Remy, or insinuate that she doesn't have the right to be at least a little pissed about it. The truth is, it happened impulsively much like his proposing to her, but he still should have talked with her about it first.
