Writing Sample
I put in an application for CAE today, and so had to clean up some of my writing. Since i don't actually tend to share things here much, I thought I would give you all a sample of my space pirate screenplay.
Disclaimers: This is never intended to actually be a movie, just something I wrote for fun. Also it is still riddled with grammer errors, and probably a typo or two. If you still like it after all that, then let me know.
INT. SMALL SHIP BRIDGE
NANCY, a darkskinned girl with dreads wearing traditional pirate style clothes, stands in the bridge of the the space ship. The bridge isn’t very large, it's a mess and shabby with flags, including the jolly roger, and brightly coloured pieces of cloth covering the walls, treasure chests open on the ground, their contents spilling out onto the floor.
DEREK, a larger male version of NANCY, wearing a knitted scarf approaches her, and leans on one of the display panels next too her. They both stare out of the front window of the ship where a large pleasure cruiser is starting to make it’s way across the screen.
DEREK
About time we found something new.
(waits for Nancy to reply)
Can’t wait to do some fighting.
(another pause)
It's better looking than this wreck, anyway.
NANCY
(finally looking at him)
I kind of like this ship.
DEREK
(laughs)
Well, you can keep it then!
NANCY
(An evil glint in her eye)
Oh No! I want THAT!
DEREK
(raises eyebrows)
Alright. Let’s do this thing then.
NANCY jumps over the counter, DEREK swings around into the seat next to her. They work the controls, and through the front window we see the big ship getting closer.
DEREK
Scared?
NANCY
Of them?
(laughs)
It’ll be a walkover!
DEREK
Yeah i suppose you’re right. I wonder why they haven’t...
There is a flash for the side of the cruiser, followed almost instantaiously by a large crash, behind them and to the right.
NANCY
Seen us? I reckon that was some pretty serious fire power.
DEREK
Shit. What would a pleasure cruiser need that for?
NANCY
I don’t know. Trying to avoid pirates?
Another explosion.
DEREK
We gotta do something.
NANCY
Any suggestions?
DEREK
Run.
NANCY
What! No way am I giving up a prize like this!
DEREK
I don’t intend too.
DEREK pushes a lever way forward, and suddenly they are zooming straight in towards the ship. NANCY swears inaudibly and starts messing around with her controls. They get to the point where the ship almost fills up the screen.
NANCY
It’s a rear loader?
DEREK
Yup. Reckon can make out the loading bay. Right... about... there.
DEREK shoots the ship, and a hole appears in the other vessel, NANCY follows with another series of shots. DEREK cheers as a hole big enough for their ship to fly through appears then they both jump up from there seats.
NANCY
What do you think you’re doing?
DEREK
Getting ready to board.
NANCY
Na-uh. You got to board first last time.
DEREK
Did not
NANCY
Did too.
DEREK
Did not.
DEREK extends a fist. Nancy does they same. They play scissors paper rock. NANCY wins with paper.
NANCY
See, told you it was my turn.
DEREK
Fine. But you have to get mum and dad packed up when we’ve captured this shit heap.
NANCY
Deal.
NANCY puts on a space suit while DEREK continues to steer the ship.
NANCY
Bet you I get 10.
DEREK
Bet you i get 15!
NANCY
You reckon you’ll beat me with with my headstart? Ok, deal. See you out there.
She disappears through a side door, leaving DEREK piloting in the ship.
DEREK
Don’t think I won’t get you girl.
He turns to his ship and pilots the ship in towards the hole.
INT. CRUISER CARGO BAY.
The cargo bay is huge, and lit by strong industrial lighting. The small ship has landed in the middle, through a large hole in the door. A ramp lowers from the side of the small craft, and NANCY runs down it dressed in a space suit with grav boots and breathing apparatus. The space suit looks quite decrepit, and has a pirate flag on the breast. She runs over to the door and presses a large button marked ‘emergency airlock’. Then runs past the ship, and out through another door into the main ship.
INT. SMALL SHIP BRIDGE.
DEREK leaves the bridge and runs through the coridoor, ESTER. An elderly women dressed entirely in knitted clothing, comes out of one of he side doors.
ESTER
What’s going on Derek dear?
DEREK
Nothing Ma, don’t worry about it. Just stay here ok? It’s really important. Don’t leave the ship.
ESTER
Ok son. Now you make sure to stay warm. Do you need a warm hat?
Ester takes a hat out of her pockets, and tries to give it to DEREK.
DEREK
Na mum, i’m fine I’ve got my scarf see.
ESTER
No no. You need a hat. Your ears will get cold. And it’s the same colour, see?
DEREK
Alright Ma, I’ll take the hat.
He puts on th hat, then jumps down through a hatch in the bottom of the ship. He runs across the empty airlock, through the same door Nancy did.
INT. CRUISER CORIDOOR DAY
NANCY is a plain carpeted coridoor. Several guards are lying at her feet, and she is just sheathing her sword. .
NANCY
You missed the welcome party
DEREK
(scowls)
Yeah yeah, where too now.
NANCY
(shrugs)
Figure we wait for the next lot to find us.
A CRACKLE sounds from a RADIO on one of the guards belts.
CAPTAIN (O.S)
Alpha-team report.
NANCY picks up the radio,
NANCY
ARR! This be alpha team!
CAPTAIN (O.S)
Thank god, what’s going on down.... wait a minute. Who are you?
DEREK
(snatching the radio away from NANCY)
ARR! We be pirates! Here to take your loot!
NANCY’
And your ship!
DEREK
Aye! And your ship!
CAPTAIN
My ship? But it’s my ship! I need it!
