Many people make a big deal about not being "labeled." And yet, we all are, constantly.

After reading that, I had to check out your profile to find out about your fandoms. *sends a geeky high five from one HP and LotR fan to another*

I don't believe in universals. Basically labels that are being used as insults by people outside a group, but have been reclaimed by people inside that group. It all depends on the usage. I'll happily describe myself as a dyke, but I don't want to hear some ignorant bigot yelling "You fuckin' dyke!"

Definitely, I don't believe in universals either. It's up to the individual person to choose their word usage and their comfort level.

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts about feminist and liberal. Too often they are associated with with negative connotations, but as you said, there are so many definitions of both words.

I used to be straight, however, but "Formerly-straight-sorta-bi-curious-lesbian" is kind of an awkward self-label, so I use "lesbian" for convenience,This is exactly the reason why I struggled with the first question and ended up choosing "human being ( ... )

I am not comfortable with the words "feminist" or "liberal", but that could be because I don't know what they mean.
