Videos I made this year:
January: Pavement, Move
June: Around the corner
November: Jesus Christ (Wood and Nails), My Girl
December: Buenos Dias, One Week
More videos made than expected, even if I don’t count the vidlets Pavement, Move and My Girl, the remaining four are a good quota for me. Actually my initial count was three before looking up the master list. I’m such a slow vidder
xandra-ptv makes rightfully fun of me. Time-consuming projects like ‘Jesus Christ’ or ‘One Week’ can take months and I’m not even sure why exactly. Compared to fast projects like ‘Around the corner’ or ‘Buenos Dias’ it almost seems ridiculous to let them wreck my brain for so long.
My favourite video this year (of my own):
‘Jesus Christ’ - Such bleach, going full circle vid in my opinion that it’s almost painful to watch, partly because it doesn’t hint at a solution for Dean’s inner faith conflict and certainly because it doesn’t linger on his pain, but you just know that there is more in store where this vid came and cut away from.
My least favourite:
This is almost impossible to say, there are five seconds in ‘Buenos Dias’ in which I just cursed Deadwood for not allowing Bullock to kill Hearst or someone very close to this arrogant asshole, because it would have been perfection and I’m not so satisfied how I turned that phrase around. Probably because this is my native language and I know what can be interpreted as metaphor and what not, this crossed plain wrong for me, although I didn’t want to use the gunfight with the road agent and Wild Bill, because it had nothing to do with the set-up. Or the seven seconds in ‘Move’ which could have been improved.
There are parts in each of my videos I’m not too happy about, on the other hand each of them clicked for me as finished. So I have to go with not too emotional invested and then I will probably come down to ‘My Girl’, because it was a vid to let myself loose and scramble madly through the leftovers from ‘Jesus Christ’ and while I enjoyed making it, this vid could probably be better and more focussed.
Most successful video:
‘Jesus Christ’ - surprisingly so. I had so many doubts about the vid and how the SPN fandom would perceive it, so I was pleased to know that the wank isn’t happening in my corner of the playfield.
Video most under appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Heh! ‘Buenos Dias’ - But I knew that heading in. Obscure German song and a series I’m not even sure was shown on free TV here yet - This video was made for an audience of two and I’m happy that the other person beside myself appreciated it as much.
Most fun video to make:
In general I must confess that I feel like I had the most fun this year vidding compared to previous years. I felt more confident in my ability to pull a vid off and not like technical stumbling blocks were awaiting me on every turn. Even the new things I learned, especially with Avisynth felt very playful ‘trial and error - who the hell cares?’ and not at all like punishment. Personally these innovative techniques I wanted to study and to discover the endless possibilities is still very exciting.
Back to the videos - ‘One Week’ for the shire joy of coming back to it on regular basis and then full time editing it in December. This vid was my shelter and refugee when I couldn’t bear my own angst infested vids any longer and truly fun to make on every level. Runner-up goes to ‘Around the corner’ as result of the 48 hours speed challenge with
charmax - I was so surprised how pleased I was with how this vid turned out and I’m still very fond of it. Actually this is the one vid where I don’t go ‘What if?’ whenever I watch it and just enjoy it for the sadistic nature of the point of view. Also rediscovering the joys of clean cuts in ‘Buenos Dias’ was an entertaining experience to say at least, especially for someone as obsessed with transitions as me.
Hardest video to make:
‘Jesus Christ’ - Not in technical terms, but scene selection and arranging - rearranging shots, this became a nightmare I entered full aware. I never thought about vidding a song for longer, just because I knew how this project would turn out for me.
The things I've learnt this year...
The joys of Avisynth and how to manipulate your final encode with it.
Things to work on in 2008
Most definitely more Avisynth filters and how to work them gracefully.
Maybe upgrading from Premiere 6.5 finally? I feel like I’m stuck in the last millennium with this version of the program and my actual lack of willingness to upgrade borders on ignorance. On the other hand, there wasn’t an effect, transition or filter up to date I couldn’t generate in it, so uhm? Yay me?
Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this year:
Remastering - part of me is eager to remaster every fucking vid I made. The SPN ones are the most tempting, because I have the DVDs already ripped on my hard drive, even when they don’t need remastering as badly as some of my very old AtS vids. ‘My Skin’, ‘Haunted’ and ‘Wild’ are the ones I truly wish to do, but knowing myself, I would probably won’t stop there.
There is also the fact that I have nine seasons of X files already sitting ripped on one of my hard drives and not touching them, seems like such waste of space. I undeniably want to vid XF among SPN, Life and Deadwood this year, but going back to AtS/BtVS doesn’t seem like such bad idea either. Also the joys of limited movie footage is tempting, but we’ll see what comes from it and if a song just inspires a movie vid. I would also like to do a speed challenge again with
charmax, I had a blast making ‘Around the corner’ and I don’t dare to invite
xandra-ptv along, because she would probably vaporize us.
The one thing I most definitely want is to keep vidding in 2008, improve myself and get much better at giving frequent feedback.
