4chan slang, going back at least a year or so, referring to those who are overly fond of Japanese entertainment media and pop culture. Used as a substitute for "wapanese", which, depending on who you ask, is a combination of either "white" and "japanese" (like "wigger", with similar connotations), or "wannabe" and "japanese". Derived from this comic, the term inherits its tone of scorn and derision.

"Wapanese" was word filtering to "weeaboo" for awhile, giving it it's origin too.
