Location: John Dee is part of the Rockefeller Music Hall in downtown Oslo, and was very easy to get to, though I tried going in the door on the wrong side of the building at first. It's one room, one bar, and clearly a concert venue, with permanently designated areas for merchandise sales. The dance floor was a little small, imo, and the lights were a bit annoying, but so it goes.
Music: The music was definitely on the new wave side, but I was hell-bent on dancing, and dance I did! Thankfully, it was mostly pretty danceable music, and I took a lot of notes (via SoundHound) to look things up later when I wasn't inebriated. After 1 am they started playing more of the music I'm used to hearing at clubs, along with some other random stuff. I actually was more of a fan of the music I didn't recognize during the first half of the night than the last half, as that's when they started breaking out Du Hast, Combichrist, Slap My Bitch Up, and other songs that I just wasn't excited about.
Cover/Drink specials: I don't know what's standard for Norwegian bar pricing (other than expensive), but I did fork over 74 NOK for a pear cider (or approx 13 USD). It was less than I had anticipated, as my local friend had told me to plan on 100+ (though that may have been for mixed drinks). No cover. The other Oslo night that I had missed out on had a 50 NOK cover, so I felt justified in buying a yummy yummy drink.
Attendees: I got the impression that there were two groups there. The first group were the regulars, who were not really dancers for the most part, though they did happily take to the floor for certain popular songs (Manson's cover of Personal Jesus, Du Hast). The second group were people who were there to dance, and may or may not have been regulars, but there were at least two annoying people in that group who tried to dance with me rather more than I would have liked (including one who actually prompted me to move myself and all my stuff to the opposite side of the dance floor), so overall I am unimpressed by the attendees.
