Tanzenfreude: Let's Go Dark at The Shelter (Atlanta, GA)

Location: The Shelter would have been hard to find, but thankfully they know they're tucked behind several buildings off the street, and put out several directional placards with a radioactive symbol to point the way. They apparently market themselves as a dive bar, but while it's not the cleanest club I've ever been to, I think "dive" is off the mark. The interior is nice, with lots of fun, different types of artwork on the walls, comfy seats, gathered drapes to delineate the bar area from the dance area, a cage, and some mechanical ponies, 'cause why not?

Music: Kind of a mixed bag. Overall, I enjoyed the music selection, but the DJs played a lot of the same bands repeatedly, which generally implies a lack of breadth in their knowledge of the genre. Even the person I went with realized they were playing a lot of the same bands, and she doesn't know the genre at all. But still, the music they played, I overall liked, and the music I didn't recognize worked and was danceable and all that (except for Stromkern, but, yay, Stromkern!)

Cover/Drink specials: No cover. The drink special was a $2 shot of a vodka/curaçao blend. Elsewise, well drinks were $5. Mine had a lot of ice and wasn't anything to get excited about, but I mostly needed the lubrication to break the dance floor, and it did do that.

Attendees: Were mostly there to hang out at their friendly neighborhood goth club. A couple of guys started up conversations with my friend and myself, mostly about how we heard about the place (being involved in running the place and promoting events). A few other people joined us on the dance floor after a while, and one was a pretty good popper. With approximately 20 people at the club (I counted 19, including the bartender and DJs, before two more people came in), that put the dancefloor participation rate at about 25%, so that's pretty decent I guess.
