It was the shifting of springs and fabric that woke him, informed him of the presense in his room before it ever decided to make itself known. Well, he, not it. Whoever it was didn’t ask, just pulled the covers back and curled up next to him, a furnace pressing against his back. “Donghae-”
The person made a sound like a buzzer in a gameshow, the one that preceeded some horrific and embarrassing punishment for getting the answer wrong. “Try again, hyung.”
Heechul’s only response was to reach over and pull the blankets more tightly around himself. He wasn’t in a sharing mood. Not this late at night. Not when the younger boy was probably in one of his gamer moods and needed someone he knew how to beat to get over what was probably the sting of defeat from some new challenger online.
“Hyung?” More questioning this time, the voice uncertain.
“Do you want me to get my computer?” Heechul sighed, though his body didn’t obey the half-hearted attempts of his mind to actually follow through with the offer.
“No.”
“Good . . .” Heechul said it as he began drifting off again, so he wasn’t entirely certain if the words were coherent. He supposed he could sleep without understanding the mystery of just why Kyuhyun had crawled into his bed. There were just so many charming facets of his personality, and his beauty besides, that the particular one that drove the young man to his late night sojourn hardly mattered.
He was vaguely aware of Kyuhyun saying something, but his mind didn’t comprehend it in the least. He was tired. Normal people were tired at this hour. He turned over and glared sleepily at Kyuhyun, mumbling something that could have been interpreted as, “What?” but which also could have meant, “Go to sleep.”
Of course Kyuhyun chose the former. “I’m just glad you’re here.”
I wish I could say the same for you. Heechul’s eyes fluttered shut again. “Have you been drinking?” He hadn’t pegged Kyuhyun for a sentimental drunk. In fact, the younger boy seemed to be a rather average drunk - giggly, laughs at everything, and falls asleep easily with a huge grin on his face. “Sungmin got a Chateau Margaux he wanted to try, didn’t he?”
“It’s turned into a wine party. Disney movies were involved.”
“Aw, baby doesn't think The Beauty and The Beast is for big kids, does he?” Heechul aske,d less groggy than before as he rubbed his face. If this was going to turn into an advice session, he needed to be awake in order to remember what he said.
“It was Lady and the Tramp.”
“And?”
“And noodles were involved,” Kyuhyun finished lamely. “It got loud. So I came up here to sleep.”
“You’re doing such a good job of that.”
“Sorry, hyung,” was all Heechul heard Kyuhyun say. But that wasn’t all he heard. There was some sort of crunching- and Heechul’s stomach rumbled.
“You’re not eating in my bed.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
That certainly explained things. Kyuhyun was hyped up on sugar and certainly not in his right mind. Heechul needed to remove the cause imediately and save his dongsaeng the trouble of a sugar-enduced crash. Heechul knew it would be hard, but he could suffer through that sugar rush. He just needed to convince the boy of the superiority of this arrangement. “There’s a fee.”
“Hyung, I haven’t eaten all day! This is all I have left!” Kyuhyun whined, shaking the small package he held in his hand. It was too dark to see what it was, but Skittles had a very distinctive smell.
It was one of those little party packages, the ones that were supposed to be fun sized but were less fun for being so small. There were maybe four left. That didn’t matter. None of it mattered.
“Which is it, you haven’t eaten or there aren’t any left?” Heechul grabbed for the package practically crawling over the other man to get to it. Someone would probably walk in - they always did - but they had walked in on stranger things. Heechul couldn’t bring himself to care too much. “Babies shouldn’t have too much sugar before they go to bed.”
Somewhere between the shouts of ‘Give it here!’ ‘Be a good dongsaeng!’ and ‘I am not afraid to tattle,’ Kyuhyun managed to stuff the remaining Skittles into his mouth, bag and all. He glared at his hyung with what Heechul assumed was supposed to be a ferocious expression.
“You think you’ve won?” Kyuhyun tried to smirk, but the victorious look really only reached his eyes, with half of a candy wrapper sticking out from between his lips. “You think I won’t go for it? You need to share with your hyung.”
Heechul licked his lips, watching as terror flitted across Kyuhyun’s face. So he was frightened, but not lacking in determination. Which was fine. Heechul liked a challenge.
And what’s there to be scared of, Heechul thought, laying down on top of his dongsaeng and grinning like a madman as he took the free part of the candy wrapper between his teeth. He started pulling away, giggling in the back of his throat as Kyuhyun followed, unwilling to give up his prize. Whatever the boy was trying to mumble, he was certainly not getting the point across. Any complains would have fallen on deaf ears anyway.
“Kyuhyun-ah, you need to get to-” Leeteuk paused mid-sentence, hand frozen on the door, the light from the hall making a profile of his features. Kyuhyun froze as well, staring at his leader with wide eyes. Leeteuk tried to start some kind of reply, but eventually settled on, “I get kicked out for snoring too loudly, but this doesn’t interrupt your sleep?”
“Hyung, it’s not what it-”
“Victory!” Heechul gingerly pinched a corner of the now spit-covered candy package, dangling it in front of Kyuhyun for a moment. “But it’s gross now. You can have it back.”
Kyuhyun stared at it for a moment, then at Heechul. He stood and brushed past Leeteuk, bowing slightly to his elder on the way out the door.
“Come on, Kyu-baby, you know you liked it!”
Heechul slept very well that night.
---
He also slept very well the next night, when Kyuhyun crawled back into his bed after the official and largely ignored ‘lights out.’ It was more of a suggestion anyways. . . . But Heechul also heard the thump and crackle of a plastic bag hitting his desk, and he smiled into his pillow. Paying the fee? He thought to himself. Kyuhyun could to worse than to bribe him with company and Skittles.
