"Taffy?" I say softly. "It's Astra." I hate to invade her privacy, but if I have to, I'll 'port in. Don't think I won't. Sometimes you need a friend whether you want to admit it or not.
Okay, then. She may be miffed with me at first, but she sounds all kinds of wrong. What kind of a friend would I be if I just turned around and left? I 'port into her apartment, where everything is dark and utterly silent. Quietly, I wander through the open bedroom door and see her sitting on the floor, in the corner. In the dark.
I can barely see her, and I can't make out the expression on her face. "Taffy?" I say, very softly.
"Okay, look, this doesn't make sense," I say. "I'm not going to argue with you about your looks or coolness or whatever, because all that's subjective." I nod firmly. "But it doesn't make sense that the boy would suddenly drop you after months and months. If he'd just wanted sex, he would have broken up with you a long time ago, you know."
How innocent she is. Bless her heart. I suddenly feel every one of my 404 years right now. I pet her hair again, unable to help myself. "I don't think that would be it," I say. "I'd imagine he felt very privileged to be your first."
I pause, not wanting to ask the next question. "Did he actually tell you he wanted to break up?"
"Doesn't it seem funny to you," I say, "that two of the most important people in your life have suddenly gone 'round the bend of weirdness? Because it does to me." Why would both of them seem to be suffering from an identical delusion that they didn't know her?
Oh, my goddess. I know my face has to have turned white when she says that name. "Can I take that to mean that Heather has it in for you somehow?" I ask. "She was at the bar last night with Stef." I opt not to mention Jordan; she so doesn't need to know that.
