I'm on a mailing list. I've been on this mailing list for a long time--I joined in either 1997 or 1998. It's a list that has to do with my field of expertise, and I know most of the people who participate. It is sometimes infuriating and sometimes very useful. Ugh. I don't understand why these things are so difficult for people to hear and respect. It makes sense to me, and though I am intelligent, I refuse to believe I am THAT much brighter than so much of the population.

I'm glad you spoke up, even if you didn't get the kind of response you should have gotten from many of the list members.

This is such a good post. You're not overreacting. Men? Not the ones who get to decide what's sexist. I'm not a mother, never will be, and I think the term devalues mothers. A minor task for a bunch of grown-ass adults is not like mothering. The term doesn't highlight all the awesomeness and hard work that goes into parenting a human being, it dismisses it. Mothers don't really work hard, y'see? It's just like managing a list!

I hear you about the water torture thing. I don't work in a male-centred industry (yet), but a lot of my interests are, so I get the drip drip drip when I try to have some fun.
