Even with their course load (and the extra jobs he worked), Taro never complained. “I have a lot of people to buy Christmas presents for,” was the only explanation he offered once November ended and December got started. But with Taro’s siblings getting older, they were far cleverer at figuring out his hiding spots in the house, which was why Taro had come over with several bags.

“You’re a lifesaver,” he said, refusing help as he lugged the presents into Mimura’s bedroom. “Thanks for helping me out.”

“It’s no problem, really,” Takuya replied, blushing at his friend’s appreciation. All he was doing was storing Taro’s presents at his house until Christmas, but Taro always smiled in gratitude like Takuya had saved him from a burning building or something. It was kind of embarrassing, giving him a strange feeling in his stomach.

Taro set the bags down, catching his breath. “I brought gifts for my mom too. She’s nosier than my brothers and sisters.” Takuya watched as Taro brought out several newspapers from one bag and some markers.

“You’re wrapping in newspaper?” he blurted out, feeling immediately guilty when Taro’s face fell. Well, of course he was. He’d probably spent weeks saving up for the presents alone - wrapping paper wasn’t as much of a priority when he had six siblings to think about. “I mean, uh…” He hurried to his closet and brought out a bag of wrapping paper. “I have some you can use. If uh…if you want to, that is.”

Taro’s eyes brightened as he dug through the paper. “So many different colors!”

Well, in Takuya’s eyes it was just wrapping paper, but Taro always saw things differently. “Use as much as you’d like. Let me help you wrap, I’m pretty good.”

They got started. Takuya didn’t want to know how long Taro had saved to get something personal and thoughtful for each and every one of his siblings, along with some new pots and pans and a necklace for his mother.

When they were finally done and the floor was a mess of ribbon and wrapping paper scraps, Taro was examining the jewelry box he’d wrapped for his mother. “Something’s missing,” he mused aloud, tipping the box back and forth in his hands.

"Ah!" Takuya remembered. “I’ve got it!” He hurried back, returning with a simple silver ribbon. He was used to matching colors thoughtfully with his flower arranging - wrapping presents wasn’t half as challenging.

He didn’t expect to see Taro tear up at the sight of the ribbon. He took it from Takuya’s hand with trembling fingers. “It’s so perfect. She’ll love it.” He couldn’t help blushing again at Taro’s reaction, looking away as he twined the ribbon around the box, tying a bow.

In a few weeks, the Christmas tree in the Mimura house would be surrounded by neatly-wrapped, expensive presents. The ones Takuya had wrapped for Taro were done similarly. Taro’s were a bit sloppier, covered with a bit too much tape, but there was so much love and thoughtfulness behind each one that Takuya could only shake his head and smile.

“What’s so funny?” Taro asked as he put the presents back in the bag to store in the corner of Takuya’s room.

“Nothing,” he said shyly. The wrapping didn’t really matter that much, did it? It was the thought behind the gift inside that was important. Taro was always teaching him things, wasn’t he?

Taro pulled on his sweatshirt and threadbare coat. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’m wrapping yours in newspaper. I can’t exactly wrap it here.”

“You don’t have to get me anything…”

“I want to,” Taro insisted, patting him on the shoulder. “You’re my friend, aren’t you?”

More than a friend, Takuya thought. More than a best friend, maybe. He really wasn’t sure, but when Taro’s smile was directed at him it was hard to describe what he felt. Best not to think too hard about that.

He changed the subject. “My grandfather had some people over last night. There’s some dessert left if you’d like to bring some home?”

Taro seemed not to have noticed Takuya’s distress, smiling again. “Cake? Is there cake?”

“Enough for each and every person in the Yamada family,” Takuya declared, leading the way to the kitchen. “Let’s go!”
