Written for the ar_drabbles challenge 'faith', and special thanks to mmegiry for putting up with me whining about how rubbish everything I was writing was, and giving me ideas when I needed them!

Title: Everything She Is
Word Count: 300
Rating: K

He doesn’t believe, but he knows the stories. The gods, those invisible capricious entities he's supposed to venerate and worship, who give and take and manipulate life on a whim. He’s never understood the appeal of giving himself up to something so far beyond his comprehension. Until now.

Athena, he thinks, as he sits in front of her and listens to the wisdom of her words, watches her discuss tactics and defence, all to keep their tiny civilisation together.

She's Artemis to him when he sees her spearhead the hunt for earth, standing under the moonlight, the silvery glow dancing over her features.

He recognises Demeter in her when he hears of her anger, her fury and her rage when anyone seeks to harm those she protects and loves.

When her beauty is in his every thought, and the love he never thought to feel again fills the hole in his heart, he remembers Aphrodite, and knows her in the red-headed goddess who walks amongst them.

He didn't believe in Hestia until he walks into his quarters one night and senses her presence, recognises her delicate scent on the air and discovers the home she has created for him, right under his nose.

He holds his consort, his Hera, as he wakes beside her and understands that true marriage needs no words and no paper, that two people can be bound together this tightly without ever needing to acknowledge it.

His goddess is all of them and none of them and mortal as he is. Too mortal for his liking, slipping slowly from his grasp. He's given himself up to her, ready and willing to worship at her feet every day that she will allow it.

He doesn’t believe in the gods, but he believes in her.
