Bill exited the Raptor smiling. Weeks since he’d last had chance to visit down here. Felt like longer. He headed towards the housing district, humming a little to himself.
“Admiral!” That was Maya, standing with Tory near one of the makeshift pyramid courts that had been set up, where Anders was coaching players. He nodded to her, grinning inwardly at the realisation that Laura must have closed school early today in anticipation.
One of the players landed heavily on the ground, scrabbling to get the ball safe in the central marking away from Anders’ tackle, then rolled onto their back, hurling the ball at the target. It hit the rim, rattled around for a moment, dropped through the hole. He began to move on, before...
“Nice shot, ma’am!”
He stopped. Turned. Took a closer look at the player getting to their feet.
Laura?
She spotted him and winked, before turning to Anders.
“Enough for today, Sam. I’ll feel that tackle in the morning.”
Anders chuckled, clapping his arm around her shoulders familiarly. “You’re really getting the hang of it now, ma’am. I thought you’d miss that one for sure.”
“Never underestimate an ex-President” she laughed, moving over to Bill, and they began to walk.
“Pyramid, Laura?”
She wiped at a streak of mud on her cheek. “Not something I could have done on Colonial One, that’s for sure.”
“I’m sure we could have rigged something up if I’d known you were keen.”
She started to giggle. “Oh gods. I can just see the Quorum arriving to find me hurling pyramid balls through the curtain at their heads.”
He laughed. “Good shot, by the way. Nice wrist action.”
She opened the tent flap and gestured for him to enter, murmuring mischievously, “Want to see it up close and personal?”
He grinned.
