The last thing he’d expected to see when he poked his head into the tent was the ex-President of the Twelve Colonies changing the diaper of a squirming baby on the fine Libran rug he’d given her. But changing it she was, and humming, and murmuring nonsense at the child who was looking up at her, wide-eyed.
He watched, quietly, until it was done and Laura had settled the baby against her chest, running her fingers through the fine baby hair.
“You’re good with kids, you know?” He came fully into the tent, sat down on the crate she used as a small table. She looked up at him, slightly incredulously, and he chuckled when he realised what he’d said. “I forget you’re a teacher. I’m used to fighting with you over politics and military decisions and trying to save the universe.”
“Wasn’t so long ago I recall you being horrified that anyone would take orders from a schoolteacher.”
“Things change. I got to know you.”
She smiled, idly kissing the baby’s head. “I’m still trying to save the universe. All that knowledge I’m trying to cram into these children’s heads is what our future will be based on.”
“Whose is she?” Nodded towards the child.
“Maya’s. My assistant? I said I’d take care of Isis for a while, give her a break.”
“She’s sweet.”
“She’s beautiful, aren’t you, Isis, honey?”
The little girl looked up at her seriously, took her thumb from her mouth and said “Rara”.
“Rara?”
“She’s trying to say Laura.”
He chuckled. “Can I call you Rara?”
“Don’t even think about it, Admiral.” She peered mock-sternly over the top of her glasses.
The evening light filtered through the tent flap, and Bill smiled, amused at how oddly content he felt in this strange little domestic scene.
