I finally got around to reading Tongues of Serpents and Crucible of Gold... they're both very good, but I'd forgotten Novik's obsessive love of semi-colons. The dialogue reads so oddly.

I always took that as mimicking the style of 19th century British/French writing. And I'm just starting Tongues of Serpents!
