Did anyone know that Brendan O'Leary, whom we should thank for bringing a touch of Britishness Irishness to our department, is consitutional advisor to the Kurdistan "government"? As in, he is living in Kurdistan. I don't know how you can advise a government which doesn't exist, but apparently it pays well.

I had him for a professor this semester. He does not live in Kurdistan. He represented Kurdistan and helped draft the Iraqi constitution in such a way as to appease the Kurds as much as possible. In order for true consociationalism to prevail in Iraq, the Kurds must give up some of the autonomy they had under Saddam Hussein, something about which they are obviously slightly concerned.

Brendan is also one of the most brilliant people I have ever encountered in my life, and has advised numerous other governments in their constitutional processes. And, he is Irish, and would be horrifed that you thanked him for "bringing a touch of Britishness to our department."

Ah, I've been so horribly misinformed -- I blame it on my sources.

I've been trying to take a class with him, but the only thing he seems to be teaching next semester is a 500-level seminar, which I'm not inclined to take.

Thanks for the info!

Do you want to meet up before school ends? Or too busy with finals?
