I got a mysterious gift in the mail, which turned out to be a t-shirt that says "Nunchucks don't kill people, Ninjas do". Awesome. Thank you, mysterious person! (aka touchytranny) :D AM wore her "Ninja in training" t-shirt and we went and walked around Target for about an hour and a half. She was definitely being ninja-y, too, with her escape attempts ( Read more... )

Ninja baby - ATTACK!!

This is a long list of grants and scholarships, some for college kids... but if you scroll down to the "private" list there's a few that mention donated or refurbished instruments for kids. Not sure how to apply though.

Cool, thanks. Looks like only one would work on the individual level but there's a form to fill out on the website. :) I'll send it along.

I really think music is important, it's just so hard to afford the instruments. I remember my flute was pretty pricey, when I got a nice one. The used one I started with sucked a lot but was sufficient to start. Amazing what a nice one does for the sound. I've lent it to my sister for now, since I haven't played it in a long time and she still plays.

Does anyone know of like, a non profit or something that would help out kids who want to do music, but can't afford the instrument?

That use to be called a public school but now thinking about that just makes me depressed.

I had to buy my own instrument for school. It's generally true that the smaller instruments are not provided by schools, and only the big ones (like tubas) are provided. There are some instruments that can be provided, but they are usually reserved for the *really* poor kids (aka on subsidized school lunches) but it's an added expense that some people can't afford even if they aren't on subsidized lunches.
