Speaking Of Geniuses With Underdeveloped Social Skills: Ficlet #3, Featuring Jarod

No, I hadn't forgotten about the ficlets I promised people! I've just been busy. And not very creatively juicy, after all.

Anyway, this one is for graycardinal, whose prompt was, "Pretender: Jarod Pretends to be a Time Lord. (Why?)" This is almost too obvious an answer to the "why?", I fear. And, yes, I'm aware that this idea really, really needs to be a full-length fic. Maybe someday, if you're lucky. Or possibly unlucky. But I wouldn't count on it.

Title: Doctor Who Am I

Character(s): Jarod, UNIT

Doctor Who Am I

Jarod took another lick of his ice cream cone and contemplated the blue box in front of him. It appeared to be a combination emergency telephone and emergency shelter for policemen, perhaps even a place to temporarily incarcerate suspected criminals. This struck him as very clever; he wondered why he hadn't seen more of these structures during his stay in London.

He had his hand on the door, about to take a look inside, when he heard footsteps running up to him and a voice shouting, "Doctor! Doctor?"

Jarod turned. He hadn't planned on being a doctor today, but if someone needed medical assistance... "Yes?" he said. "Do you need help?"

The uniformed young man who'd called out skidded to a stop in front of him. He looked a little surprised at Jarod's appearance for some reason. Maybe it was the ice cream? Jarod considered offering him some, but most people seemed not to appreciate it if you suggested they eat something you'd already licked.

"Yes, sir," said the man. "I'd say we do. If you'd come with me, sir?"

"All right," said Jarod. It was possible this was some sort of trap, but he didn't think so. It certainly didn't have Miss Parker's characteristic style about it. "You're with UNIT," he said as he followed the man towards an army-issue vehicle. "I've worked for UNIT!" He remembered some very interesting, if rather implausible, hypothetical invasion scenarios he'd simulated when he was younger.

"Yes, sir," said the man. For some reason, he looked reassured.

It wasn't until after the encounter with the Dalek that Jarod realized they hadn't been looking for a doctor at all. But at that point, it seemed wiser not to correct them. Despite UNIT's security, it wasn't at all difficult to hack into the records of the person he was accidentally impersonating to make sure he had the necessary background knowledge. The key to a successful performance, he quickly concluded, mostly seemed to be acting as if you knew everything. Well, he could certainly do that.

Jarod had never pretended to be an alien before, but it was promising to be a lot of fun. Already he had an idea or two about how to teach those Daleks a little lesson...
