Some say the Angel was Samael; the Zohar records it as such. Others say that the name of the angel was also Peniel, who was traditionally associated with Venus and Friday. It seems to me that the text supports that more because the angel touches the hollow of Jacob's thigh -- a very common euphemism in Hebrew (and Greek) for phallus. The Chaldean astrology of the time associated Venus with both the 5th (sexual activity) and 12th (sin) mundane houses.
