"She's on the move, Bill. Get her!"
The frantic call gave him just a moment's notice before a flash of blonde and pink stole through the living room. Olivia never was a fan of getting dressed after a bath. In fact, they went through this nearly every bath. As soon as she cleared the bathroom door, she took off down the hall, naked as a jaybird. Somehow, he and Karen were raising a nudist without even trying.
Springing to his feet, he managed to make it into the doorway just as she did. He scooped her up triumphantly, slinging her sideways under his arm, listening to her squeal. Her little hands flapped at his belly, trying ineffectively to get him to release her, but her cackles let him know she was having the time of her life.
“Daddy! No! Bad daddy!”
Now that made him chuckle. It was her new favorite phrase - bad daddy. He could almost picture her thwapping him with a rolled up newspaper.
“I know, Livvy, I know. Daddy’s awful, but you, my little lady, still need to get dressed.”
“No clooooothes.”
Karen’s chuckle followed him down the hall. Of course it did, she was officially off for the night, as her duties extended only until the time the towel came off. Getting Olivia in pajamas was entirely his responsibility.
Lucky for him, he was almost a professional by now. Her shirt went over her head and he managed to turn her around to wiggle her into her underwear before he released his football hold on her. Karen was probably watching and laughing at him, but he was doing this his way, and he was doing it well.
Olivia huffed, pushing her wet blonde hair out of her eyes with her mother’s almost trademark exasperation. This was not how she liked it to go and, just like her mother, she made her feelings known. By now, of course, it only made him chuckle. Just like when Karen gave him that face.
“Not fair, daddy.”
“Oh I know, sweetheart, but I’m your daddy and I love you. So naked time’s over.” He kissed her head quickly. “No more full moons tonight.”
He punctuated his comment with a final pat on her bum before releasing her. “Go play. We’ll read a story in a little bit.”
“Fiiiiinally.”
Again, just like her mother.
He waited until her back was turned to roll his eyes. He hadn’t even bothered mentioning combing her hair. It would be easier to brush once it was dry, and it wasn’t like they going anywhere for the rest of the night.
“Okay, Livvy, call if you need us.” He knew his words were probably lost in transit, as his daughter’s attention had already turned to the impressive doll party she’d been organizing all day.
“Kaydaddy.” She dismissed him with a quick wave of her hand.
Yeah, she was definitely lucky she was cute.
As expected, his wife was waiting in the hallway, looking amused by his methods. It was a talent he knew she was reluctant to praise, but if it got the job done she knew she couldn’t argue.
“The party is on, I was told my services were no longer needed.”
She patted his chest as he draped his arm around her. “Well, you did save us all from the full moon. So at least there’s that.”
He couldn’t help but chuckle. “You’re right. There is that. Bill Buchanan, defender of the moon.”
“Mmm, I’d say that’s a perfect title for you, Bill.”
