So I need to get a new external hard drive...any brands I should look more closely at and/or stay away from? I'm looking to spend less than $100, and am flexible with size as long as it's over 250gb.

I've had good luck with the Seagate FreeAgents:

If your computer can do it, go for a drive that supports eSATA or IEEE 1394/Firewire. USB is the worst way to hook up hard drives.

I like the WD Passport series. Portable, good price, and USB powered. The only ones I can think to warn you away from would be the Maxtors. We used to get those returned all the time.

Yea, I've never had a problem with WD and they're really starting to drop in price. If you don't want a passport size you can get a terrabyte for about $80 IIRC.

Maxtor was bought out by Seagate. Maybe the quality of that brand has improved?

WD Passport seems to be really popular over here. I'm thinking about getting one for myself, eventually.
