I agree that athletes are disciplined and make colleges well-rounded but:
a) There have been some incidents of guys from 'Nade being accepted to school like Stanford on baseball scholarships who have had wayyy BELOW average grades. Personally i think that is unacceptable, even if he is superb at baseball.
b) Schools that give preference to athletes seem to be motivating those who do not have a passion for athletics to join a team just to put that on the application. That's bad to the bone man.
Wow this made me think. Let's bring it up in french class.
Hey Katie, I agree, I think that sports are way over-rated for colleges. I don't know, I just don't think it's fair that some people that want to go to a prestigious school go learn how to think have to compromises their places for the places of athletes. Why can't athletes go to "athletic" schools, if ther real point in life is to be an athlete? Oh...that's right...because prestigious universities insist upon having athletics programs at their schools so that they can get more money from their alumni and for their sports crap.
God, I hate them.
It's why I want to go to a college without competitive sports teams.
Yeah, i'm with you, but at the same time few people really succeed in professional athletics. There's more open to academic students really. But yeah, it's not like a college gets really excited over a good chemistry student making them lots of moolah.
I came across your journal and was caught by the subject of the student/athlete debate or whatnot. From personal experience I can attest to the extreme difficult to be part of any varsity or competitve level sports team while still taking APs. This struggle i find is healthy in my growth at chaminade and for the future. I think that no matter what academic level youre at its goin to difficult to balance. Also its the same difficulty to get into a presitgous school on an athletic scholarship as it is to get in academically. Its not fair to compare the two admissions processes.
i do also agree that schools are looking to bring in the money however they can and athletics is a flashly and easy way of doing so.
I see what you mean. I couldn't imagine juggling playing on a varsity team and taking AP classes. I just wish it wasn't that you have to pick between two tracks, the athletic and the academic, if it's going to matter for colleges. But you've seemed to handle both well - you're quite the juggler. :) Plus, we'll all get into good colleges. If not, there's always pierce. woot woot.
