In general, I tend to have really positive feelings towards my students, both in my class and in tutoring. Especially in tutoring - the students I've had in the past have been really great, and really appreciative. This is the first time I've tutored with the athletics dept. though, and the culture there is really different. I for the most part still enjoyed my students, but yesterday a bunch of them didn't follow through on some things they said they'd do (like show up for an extra pre-final session!!) and it pissed me off. Part of it is my style - its geared towards students who come to tutoring because they want to, and these students do not.
Yeah, I REALLY didn't want to have my tooth shaved. REALLY.
I actually really like teaching and students. I realized why these particular students act the way they do though - my tutoring style/expectations are very much geared towards students who have sought out tutoring themselves, and are interested (at least at some level) in being there. These students haven't - they are forced to be there, so my style has been inappropriate, and thus they have behaved inappropriately. Hopefully in the next session I can work more properly.
I'm actually not teaching a class - just tutoring this summer. They participate ok, cause they don't have a choice. I was pissed yesterday cause they didn't show up for the extra session I offered.
