Societal toughness in decay

I have a beef with cleanliness, or maybe it is a disagreement with the degrees to which people overthink, overspecialize, obsess, and overreact in today's society. I constantly see people worrying about their allergies, about their health, about asbestos(in one case). Agreed up to a point. My own feeling is that obsessing over unnecessary worries clutters up the real worries. 100 years ago a lot of people died unnecessarily (two of my grandmother's five children, for a start, and a third nearly died of diphtheria). I'm not happy about multiple vaccinations because of the effect they had on my father during WWII, but mumps is a killer, and it took me five months to get over whooping cough ( ... )
