So... we're doing a constitutional review at work. The Cat's Eye constitution is generally referred to as our Operating Policies and Procedures. That was your random trivial pursuit bit for the day.
Anyhow, there's an old provision in the constitution left over from when the Cat's Eye was operated as more of a business that stipulates that managers are supposed to be paid for event supervision. It also has a clause saying we can give up our wages for whatever reason. Anyhow, when we stopped operating as a business (ie. before Food Services got a monopoly over bar and food service on campus) we lost a big part of revenue, part of that was the bit that was used to pay managers. As such, for the past year and a half, we've given up all our wages. We still get paid an honorarium of $2000 per year, but that's not really the issue.
So... we get to this provision in the Operating Policies and Procedures and the Dean suggests that we just strike it. I make the argument that it's nice to keep around because sometimes the job is demanding, and sometimes we are in better financial conditions than others. He replies that it's a volunteer position and that the honorarium was recently increased from $1000 to $2000 per annum. Also, that there are dozens of volunteer student leaders on campus that don't have the same benefit of a $2000 honorarium.
I felt like saying that I'm not sure there are quite as many volunteers around campus that end up working 6 days of the week, have lost count of the number of 16 hour days they've put in, and have cleaned up more furniture of spilled drinks and vomit than the housekeeping staff has. Unfortunately, I haven't been keeping any sort of factual log-book that I could just present to them to demonstrate that it's not an ordinary volunteer position I hold. It also bugged me that no one else on the board bothered to say anything.
I do this because I want to do it. I enjoy it and it's nice to give something to the Vic community, but I'm starting to have trouble making rent and stuff like that. It's just stuff like this that makes me feel a little bit under appreciated at work and makes me think twice about whether I should reapply. I'm 90% sure I still will, but I'll also have Board of Regents and Senate stuff to do.
