So I'm currently working on my applications for GA Tech and GA State and I've come to the point where I have to explain why I was placed on Academic Warning for my grades the previous semester. Which in and of itself is great, because this gives me the opportunity to explain why I went from making the Dean's List every semester to being placed on

heh...but in all seriousness, I'd just find a way to organize the facts about what happened into a well written response, and only give evidence to support those facts. Try not to get too emotional about it either. But the first thing you'll have to realize is that if the excuse is valid, then you shouldn't have to worry about it coming off like a sob story.

Yeah, that's actually what I did. I guess I'm just my own worst critic.

I would focus on the "learning from my experiences" and "personal growth" angles. I dunno what your situation is, but accentuating the positive outcome would be the best approach, IMHO.
