It was Adamant who had woken Uther; Adamant, growling a low, dangerous growl, her head dipped between her shoulders, alertness rippling through her body like tension in a spring. Chase could sense Old Lace wanting to come to his side--the dog had surprised him and usually that was all the creature needed to come bounding along, ready to maul whatever stood in his way. But the cold was giving her pause.

’I’m okay for now.’

He didn’t put the knife away, not when he caught the gleam of the massive blade in the other guy’s hand.

“Okay, here’s the deal,” Chase began, squaring strong shoulders, even though instinct was telling his body to fold into itself with the cold. “Me and my dinosaur are just gonna crash in your stable for the night. We’re cold, we’re hungry, and we really, really don’t wanna fight. But seeing as Old Lace doesn’t take well to the cold, you try to kick us out and you’re gonna have a few less horses, got that, Prince Charming?” He shifted his grip on the knife in case it did come to blows. Chase had taken on a doom bot with less, he was pretty sure he could handle a LARPer and his dog.

The stranger had a knife, a little dirk, and a great many words for so unexpected an intrusion. There was a time when it would have bemused Uther utterly, but such a time had passed, and he had learned much in this strange world, and come to accept, even sometimes understand it ( ... )

Chase thought for a moment, bright blue eyes narrowing in the growing darkness. Only what light filtered in from the streets reached this far back into the back into the park. There were no stars; clouds draped heavy and low from one edge of the horizon to the other. The guy looked to be about his age, which precluded him from the almost literal ‘never trust anyone over 20’ rule Chase had lived by for the last year ( ... )
