Alice did nothing by accident. She was very good at making it look as if things happened around her by chance, though, which is how she happened to encounter Carrot Ironfoundersson on his patrol, giving her an excuse to linger in a place she knew would be part of Tim's patrol.
Since her first unnerving glimpse of Tim's future, she'd been keeping a rather closer eye on him than most. And when he'd started disappearing lately, she'd noticed. It wasn't necessarily cause for alarm; there were more than a few nonhuman/non-vampires in town. She already lost track of him whenever he spent time with Abe, and of course she knew Abe was benign. And the people who posed the most horrifying threat to him were humans, or she wouldn't have seen them to begin with.
Still, she wondered.
"...the Überwald League of Temperance," Carrot was saying, with his usual earnestness. "There are quite a few members these days, and even an Ankh-Morpork branch. We've even got a Black Ribboner on the Watch, Lance-Constable von Humpeding. She's very dedicated."
"That would be something to see." Bringing her attention back to the conversation, Alice smiled up at the tall policeman. Even perched as she was on the back of a bench, he fairly towered over her. "Where I come from, most people don't even believe they exist. I suppose there would be more motivation to go cold turkey if everybody knew what you were."
"I suppose so." Carrot shrugged his broad shoulders. "Times change, and the world is getting smaller. Not literally, of course," he hastened to add. "It's just, with the clacks and all, and even the Dwarfs starting to adopt more modern ways..."
Alice was interested in what he was saying. Since her first meeting with Byron, she'd been curious to learn more about vampires from different worlds. Besides which, she just liked the man. Well, he would be hard not to like, she thought.
But she was also looking for someone, and right then she spotted him. She raised a pale arm and smiled in greeting to the small figure as he came into view.
