It was the last holiday Chase expected to be celebrating, given the circumstances.
But then, given the circumstances Aternaville was the last place he expected to be celebrating it. The twins had been oddly listless for the last week, and however much Chase told himself this was their lesson to learn: 'Your parents won't always be there for you. One day you'll need them even if you promised yourself you never would and they still won't be there.' He didn't have the heart for it, not when Uther seemed just as listless chasing dream-memories some place he could never follow.
With a shock he was reminded of what Karolina told him after she fled Majesdane: they were all falling apart, they had been since day one, they just needed a way to fall apart together. And every time Chase thought he had, he was frustrated to find some part of him still held together--he was just too damn stubborn, even on a day like today--to let himself fall apart like he should have over a year ago.
His only concession seemed to be that he avoided the Stein Bus as though it were an armed bomb. It had taken a few months to recognize it, but beneath the cool mechanical facade, the bus's voice was chillingly familiar. It sounded like his mother. (Of course he would have noticed that today of all days.) So when he needed to find Old Lace after she'd wandered too far in her hunt, he'd used one of the horses, and was just taking off the tac and saddle when Uther made his way out into the yard.
"Hey brother," Chase smiled tersely, but Old Lace, ever the voice of his subconscious, of the affections he felt but would never display openly, greeted Uther with a trilling nuzzle.
