I actually had no problem with the article---and I think it's vitally important that we on the successful side of the divide be aware of the kind of resentments and opinions others hold, say, about the counselling office's attitude towards black students. I'm not saying I'm convinced that they're correct, but I do think that we should know what the impressions are on either side. And I thought the article did a fair job of bringing out the cultural pressures that are not the school's fault; I think what it really comes down to is that the school is not making enough of an extra effort to demonstrate administrators' understanding of these issues and committment to overcoming them---not that a deeply entrenced institutional racism is oppressing African-American students.
At least it's better than the one The Stranger did a few years back.
ah, i see you've gotten your hands on this article. it's proposterous the information they put in it. the guy came with his camera lady and took down names of students that they "felt" excluded out from the class, which of course totally gives them that "two-side," because they purposely do it themselves to create the two-side pictures of garfield in their article. damn, that was a run on sentence. yeah, you know, as always reading the article, some of the information that is said there, i don't even know is true and wonder what his sources are. no matter what though, garfield will always be in that scene of academic controvery...i don't think it's a problem to be boardcast, nor is it just a problem at garfield...the public is always up in our school's grill, that's what is it.
