Actually, I hate to burst your bubble.... but lungs don't work all that well when they're disconnected from the inner chest wall. You see, there are these two thin linings called the visceral and the parietal pleura that have negative space between them. And what causes the expansion and contraction of your lungs is the intercostal and other chest muscles expanding the volume of your thoracic cavity, thus creating negative space within the cavity. Because of the negative space created there and the negative space in between the visceral and parietal pleura, air rushes in to fill the cavity how and where it can. Which is normally in through your pharynx, through your larynx, down your trachea, through the bronchi and down into the more complex bits of your lungs ( ... )

What he meant by "freezing up" was that what he came up with was so god-awful repulsive that his machine's CPU decided to hard lock the whole system.
