The Queen and her Knight

Once upon a time,

Being born as a royalty, she often dreamed of having a fairy tale life - one full of magic, fairy godmothers, evil witches, and courageous princes. But when her parents died and she ascended to the throne at the age of ten, Queen Perdita realized that that was not meant to be.

Royalty in real life was nothing like fairy tales. It was full of danger and deceit. She had to learn to see and know everything. She must be brave and strong even if there are no magical fairies or brave princes. She had to for the sake of her beloved people and her country.

A queen fell ill and was threatened by her evil kin.

She was hastily transported to the United States of America when her condition became worse. Her nation’s best medical facilities and doctors could not give her the aid that she needed. Her best chance for survival was in this foreign land whose medicinal knowledge and facilities were more advanced.

Queen Perdita sat primly in her hospital bed. Her body was weak but her spirit was not. She must survive. She must live for if she dies, her country will fall into the wrong hands.

Count Werner Vertigo, her uncle, was next in line for the throne. Should she die, he will become King of Vlatava. But she knew, as her deceased father knew, that he will not be a good ruler. He was a man who would not hesitate to do evil deeds to get what he wants, even at the expense of innocent people. He will lead her nation to ruin should he rise into power.

As the doctors explained her condition and the operation she had to undergo, she listened attentively. She needed a heart transplant but their hospital didn’t have the organ that she needed yet. It was still miles and miles away. They would have to wait.

But she couldn’t afford to do that. Time was not on her side.

“Do it now.” She told them with absolute resolve.

“But Your Majesty…”

“The longer I stay in this condition, the greater is the danger for my people.” This was a golden chance for Count Vertigo. He would undoubtedly do something to deposed her or worse.

“I am ready to take the risk.”

She gently lay down on the operating table and they put a plastic mask on half of her face. As the gas from it slowly put her to sleep, she fervently prayed. Let me live. Let me survive. For my people. For my people.

Her evil kin almost won but he was thwarted by a brave young warrior.

When she opened her eyes with her heart beating stronger than ever, she believed that the crisis was over. The doctors told her that the operation was a success. She was also recovering well. In just a few days, she could go back to her country. It was wonderful news. She was now safe, alive, and stronger. Her uncle would not be able to usurp the throne.

But her joy was short lived. Her guards had escorted a young man in her room. He was requesting an immediate audience with her.

The young man was called Kid Flash and he was the person that delivered the heart necessary for her operation. He was, in a way, her saviour. He was also the strangest person she had met. His hair was vibrant red and his eyes were vivid green. Half of his face was covered by his cowl. He wore a brightly coloured suit that tightly fits his body; it was as if the suit was his second skin. It was the most… indecent clothing she had ever seen a man wore in her life. She almost blushed at the sight of it. Her governess would be furious if she ever knew about this. A second after that she noticed the bandages adorning his head and body.

“Your Majesty…” he started.

Queen Perdita reined the fury that she felt as Kid Flash relayed to her the treacherous actions of Count Vertigo. She had expected him to do something but never this. He had attempted to murder her. It was an act of treason.

“He had to be punished.” He concluded.

And she wanted nothing more than to do just that. But… “I can’t.” she said solemnly.

“What?!” Kid Flash exclaimed. “But why? I mean you’re the Queen. Everyone has to follow your orders, right? You could just say “Arrest him!” and it’s prison time for Vertigo!”

She smiled ruefully at him. He may be older than her, but he was still quite naïve. “It’s not that simple Kid Flash.”

“How about kicking him out of the royal family tree? He tried to kill you. That’s enough of a good excuse, right?”

She shook her head. “I can’t do that either.”

Shock and incredulity was etched on his face. “WHAT?! You’re a Queen! Can’t you do anything about this?!”

Her guards were glaring at the young man’s disrespect. They seem to be just waiting for her order to throw him out of the room. But she won’t do that for she could understand Kid Flash’s frustrations very well. She may be the most powerful person in her country but even she is bounded by their law. They were some things she could not do or command.

“I cannot act against Count Vertigo based on mere accusations.” She told him.

It only made Kid Flash even more frustrated. “Accusations?! Those are not mere accusations, Your Majesty! He really really wanted you dead! Vertigo was doing everything he can to stop me from helping you. Do you know how much I had to go through and how seriously nasty the villains I had to face-off to bring your new heart to you on time?!”

Actually she didn’t know. She wouldn’t mind learning more about it though but it won’t matter. “Be that as it may, you have no proof Kid Flash. You have nothing but your words.”

For a second, Kid Flash just stood there gaping at her. Then he growled and fisted his red hair in anger.“He’s getting away all over again!” he yelled. Then his green eyes stared at her. “And he’s going to try to kill you again.”

Queen Perdita stared back at him unflinchingly. “Yes.”

Kid Flash looked like he was about to lash out once more but he stopped. Then his face lit up and his lips stretched into a wide grin. She thought he looked better when he smiles.

“Your Majesty, I’ve got an idea…”

Together, the Queen and the warrior defeated her evil kin and he was punished for his deeds.

It went well.

Count Vertigo had fallen into their trap.

She watched with vindicated satisfaction as her uncle faltered when he saw her alive and well after Kid Flash removed the curtain. She also felt good when she showed him the solid proof of his treason - a voice recording. She was now free to act against him and blood kin or not, she will not give him any mercy.

“Count Werner Vertigo. As Queen of Vlatava, I hereby accuse you of high treason against the crown and revoke your diplomatic immunity.”

Her sentence on him meant more than that. She knew he understood that well as fury slowly dawn on his face.

He was now a pariah in their country.

He no longer has a right to the royal throne.

He can no longer hide behind his nation's name.

He was now on his own.

“No!” Count Vertigo unsheathed his sword from his cane and attacked. But Kid Flash protected her and parried his sword with a dextrose stand. In one swift move, he managed to knock the weapon out of the Count’s hand. Her guards immediately arrested the incapacitated villain and led him away to prison for good.

It was now finally over.

The Queen tried to reward the brave warrior for his help but he refused.

“Thank you.” Queen Perdita told Kid Flash gratefully. “Your plan worked perfectly.”

He grinned at her. She was starting to love his smiles. “Well, when I woke up and learned you were in recovery, I knew he will make another attempt on your life unless A - he thought you were dead and two - he lose that darn immunity then sent him away for good.”

He then presented her the Count’s sword cane. He was giving it to her as if it was rightfully hers. She shook her head. “That sword does not belong to my country andnot to the Count.” She told him sternly. The sword must be given to rightful hands. She smiled at an idea.

“I could arrange for you to have it as a reward… or as a souvenir?” Her voice sounded so unsure that she quickly reprimanded herself in her mind. She is a Queen. She should not sound so hesitant. She was just offering him the sword. He deserved it after everything he had done. There was no reason for her to be nervous. Wait. Nervous? She was not nervous. She could not be nervous. She is a Queen. Why was she acting this way? Why was she feeling this way?

Kid Flash looked at the cane then back at her in contemplation. After that, he shook his head. “No.”

She felt a twinge of sadness at his refusal. But before she could ask why, he had walked on her bedside. He then took her hands and clasped it around the sword cane. “It’s now yours. You’re the one that put him out of commission.” He grinned.

“But not without your help.” She corrected.

His smile became even brighter at that. “Well of course. I mean I kinda fought him to the death down at the hospital basement a while ago and I played bait to the trap and all but…” Kid Flash looked her in the eyes. Earnestness and sincerity were in his vivid green eyes. “I could fight him for all I can but it won’t do any good 'cause he will always get away with it. He will always escape and he will do harm to others over and over again. But now that you’ve removed his immunity, he no longer has a place to hide. You took away his escape, Your Majesty, and for that, he would now pay for his crimes.”

“He will now be held accountable for all his actions.” She agreed.

“And I couldn’t have done it without you, Queen Perdita.”

Her heart thumped loudly at her chest. She briefly wondered if that was normal. Was that an effect of the operation procedure or was it because of the way Kid Flash just said her name? Why was she thinking like this? What was wrong with her?

Queen Perdita pushed away the confusing thoughts out of her mind. There was still one more important thing she had to do.

“But Kid Flash, you have done a great deed for me and my country. What could I possibly reward you?” she asked. She is a Queen. Things must be done properly.

The masked young man grinned at her again. “You’ve already given my reward, Your Majesty!”

“What? But how?” she asked. She hadn’t given anything to him. Not yet.

“Your smile.” He answered gleefully. “You’re alive and I saw you smile. That’s good enough for me.”

Her heart beat even louder and she felt warmth rush over face. That was… he was… she was…

The warrior couldn't be able to stay by her side for he had other duties, so he bid her goodbye.

Kid Flash suddenly yelped and put a hand on his ear. “Ow! Wha? Oh! Well... No no no! The mission was a success! She’s alive and Vertigo is- No no! Hey listen! Let me explain and-“ He then gulped nervously. “Right. Of course. Sorry, Batman. I’ll be going now.”

Queen Perdita looked at him curiously. “Batman?”

Kid Flash blushed in embarrassment. “He’s a hero like me. Only he’s older… moodier… scarier.” He then shuddered. “But he’s nice… when the occasion calls it and he’s the one who gave me the mission to deliver your new heart.”

“I see.” There were a lot of good people in this country. Perhaps she should start building stronger ties between the United States of America and Kingdom of Vlatava.

“Uh… er… You’re Majesty, Queen Perdita, I really really need to go now. Batman’s waiting for me to report back at HQ and I have to tell the guys that you’re still alive and Vertigo’s gone and there’s no international incident and I just didn’t start World War Three. If I don’t get there soon I am sooo dead… So uh… if I may…”

She held back a giggle. She liked seeing his smiles but seeing him this nervous and fidgety was quite endearing too. “Don’t worry, Kid Flash. I have other guards waiting outside my doors. I will be safe. You could leave now.”

That put him at ease. “Really. That’s good. So er goodbye, Your Majesty! It was great meeting you! Until next time again!”

But before Queen Perdita could tell him her goodbyes, he was gone in a flash. She was now alone in her hospital room with the sword cane in her hands. How could he be gone so fast?

She then carefully put the sword at her left side and gently laid down on the bed. This has been an eventful day for her.

She almost died.

There had been an attempt on her life.

Her Uncle was finally paying for all his wrongdoings.

Her country and her people were now safe once again.

And…

She just met Kid Flash.

Queen Perdita closed her eyes and she could see his smiles and green eyes. She imagined how he had fought hard and tried hard to save her life - to give her her heart. She clearly remembered how he protected her from Count Vertigo. She could also remember how warm he was when he held her hands. She couldn’t help but smile when she remembered how he said her name. And his last words: "Goodbye, Your Majesty! It was great meeting you! Until next time again!”

He wanted for them to meet again?

There was no magic. Their meeting was not romantic. She was not in a lovely gown. And Kid Flash was no prince.

But they had defeated the evil Count and their fated meeting was profound. She was a true Queen in her words and actions while Kid Flash was like a chivalrous knight in a shining armour.

As she slowly fall asleep, Queen Perdita thought that maybe, just maybe, her life could be like a fairy tale after all.
