In the Eyes of the Kid and Lanterns
Sometimes Kid Flash couldn't help but pout at the injustice of it all. Flash always reprimands him whenever he's not paying attention during a fight. But Flash himself is doing that same mistake right now and he's getting away with it! Kid Flash thinks it's because of the adult card.
Or maybe somebody does notice it but reacts differently.
Kid Flash watches as the two Green Lanterns help Flash. They take charge of the speedster's blind spots while defending him from projectiles that are too fast and too many to dodge in time.
Then when three heroes team up to defeat the enemy, it takes all of Kid Flash's self restraint to stop himself from cheering like the geeky fan that he is while in costume. He also had to stop himself from joining the battle. Flash and both Green Lanterns will tear him a new one if he goes to a fight that's way over his head.
From his spot with the rescued civilians, Kid Flash watches as the team up of his mentor and Green Lanterns defeats the enemy. People cheer at the captured villain. It is only then that Kid Flash smiles and laughs and cheers like there's no tomorrow.
They win again with all limbs intact. Safe and victorious.
It's a good day.
Meanwhile on the battle site,Flash scowls at the two Green Lanterns. "Do you really have to hit the guy so hard? I doubt even Superman beats up his villains like that and he's not even your villain but mine!"
Hal Jordan shrugged. "What? It gets the job done."
The answer only fuels Flash's annoyance. "I know but that's not how I-we do things in Central. And what are you doing here in Central?! Me and Kid could take care of things here ourselves!"
It's John Stewart's turn to answer. "We were just going to pay you guys a visit when this guy showed up and caused all kinds of trouble. We just have to do something about that, you know?"
Flash scoffs and grumbles. "I bet Guy Gardner won't be such a worry wart as you two. Sheesh. People might think I'm such a damsel in distress with how often you guys hang around and beat up my villains around here."
The two Lanterns stiffens at their friend's rant. After that they share a look. Time to initiate their plans.
"All right, fine. Sorry that we seem to be babying you too much, Flash. But if you want us to stop then pay more attention to the fight instead of thinking jokes and witty comebacks to throw at your enemies next time." John lectures.
"Hey!" Flash yells indignantly.
"And stop daydreaming too much about Iris and food while on patrol. I saw you almost ran into a lamp post one time while on patrol with Kid Flash. Of course, you managed to notice it at the last minute and did some fancy footwork to avoid it and made yourself look cool to the Kid but I know better." Hal gives him a pointed look. "You're lucky that your sidekick practically doesn't see any fault in you. If that had happened between Green Arrow and Speedy..." Hal shakes his head at the thought.
"Ha! You guys are just jealous that I have a sidekick and you don't. And Kid Flash is the best sidekick any hero could ever have and he's... wait... YOU SAW ME WHAT?! But that was yesterday and it was just the two of us and- ARE YOU TWO STALKING US?!" Flash points an accusing finger at his best friends.
Both look away in denial but Flash distinctly hears Hal murmur "No offense but you speedsters really need it. Short attention span. Scatterbrains. Denseness..."
Before the Flash could counter the two Lantern's accusations of obliviousness, Kid Flash appears beside them.
The Kid gushes excitedly about their team-up and victory. Flash couldn't help but ruffle his partner's hair affectionately. Wally might be getting the hang of being "Kid Flash" but he still stays the same old Wally. His nephew's presence slightly dulls his annoyance at the moment.
The Green Lanterns appreciate the Kid's appearance too. It's nice hearing praises on their work sometimes. It's not that they want everyone singing their praises whenever they get a job done but after seeing and hearing only Superman's, Batman's, and Wonder Woman's glory all the time on the news can make you feel a little attention deprived.
As the two speedsters talk, the Lanterns decide to initiate their Flash Protection Plan from The-Guy-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
"Flash, Kid Flash." John calls them and asks "Can you tell me what time it is?".
Flash answers, checking a watch programmed in his glove. "It's dinner time?!"
Kid Flash's eyes widen in alarm. "We're late for dinner!" He hates being late for dinner. His Mom and Dad will kill him. But he'll not be alone because his Auntie Iris is so going to kill his Uncle Barry too.
In half a second, the two speedsters runs off. In their absence, John and Hal conspires.
"I'll keep them preoccupied. I'll drop a visit at the Allens. Barry says it's their scheduled family dinner with the Wests and Garricks tonight." John says.
"You do that. Make sure not a single speedster gets a wind of this while I drive Guy out of Central. Damn Guy thinks he's the better Lantern to work with the Flash..." Hal grumbles and floats in mid-air. "Oh, and tell Iris and Jay about Barry's lamp post incident. They'll appreciate that." He reminds his fellow Lantern with a grin.
John smiles. "Sure, I will."
That night is the most embarrassing dinner Barry ever had - he will get back at Hal and John for it. For Iris, the Garricks, and the Wests, it is the most hilarious and memorable joint dinner yet.
No one knew of the epic battle between two Green Lanterns near the border of Central City.
Hal and John celebrate for a mission accomplished.
Three months after that, the two Green Lanterns had an outer space mission. It lasted for almost two weeks and as soon as they arrive back to Earth, they visit Central City only to see Guy Gardner hanging around in the Allens in a family barbecue.
Wally welcomes them. "Uncle Hal! Uncle John! Welcome back!" Upon receiving no response since the two new visitors are busy staring in disbelief at Guy, Wally continues talking. "So... how was your mission? I bet it was totally cool and oh you're looking at Uncle Guy. He just came here a week ago. He helped me and Uncle Barry when this lady called Star Sapphire suddenly appeared and did you know him? He was so cool! And he also worked well with Uncle Barry and-"
"Wally!" Barry calls. "Don't hold them up there. Get in here! The food's almost ready!"
The younger speedster drags Hal and John by the hand into the yard to join the rest of family with Guy. The delicious scent of cooked burgers and kebabs waft in the air.
Iris and Mary pass plates and utensils around the table while Rudy West tends to the grill. Jay, Joan, and Wally go to the kitchen to get the drinks and the dessert. Barry leads them to their seats.
"Glad you guys made it!" he claps them both in the shoulders. "Bats said you two would take longer but of course I didn't believe him because I know you two better than anyone. You guys can't stay out of Earth for so long."
That's because you'll be in trouble in no time at all. Both Green Lanterns think.
"Oh and by the way, I hope you didn't mind inviting Guy over. He helped Kid and I when this woman with a purple ring came out of nowhere and picked a fight with us. It was tricky dealing with her because her powers were just like yours. But Guy apparently knew her and gave us a hand. We defeated her but she escaped." Barry explains in between bites of burgers and barbecues.
Meanwhile, Hal and John tune him out. They are too busy glaring at Guy at the moment. Guy, on the other hand, is too busy ignoring their glares and is talking to Rudy. Then he chats with Iris and Mary. When Joan and Jay arrives with the drinks and Wally with the cake, Guy immediately helps them and starts talking to them too. Every now and then, he waves and smiles at Barry too.
He's practically leeching everybody's attention.
When the two Lanterns tune back to Barry's talk, they wish that they didn't listen for a while longer because as soon as he finishes his last burger, Barry says "You know, I don't understand what you have against Guy. He's pretty nice. Maybe he should be added to the-"
"No!" Both Hal and John yell.
"But-"
"NO!"
Their outburst catches the attention of everyone.
"Uncle Hal, Uncle John, is there something wrong?" Wally asks them with concern.
Guy Gardner is behind the kid, smiling so smugly at them.
Oh. It is on.
