I've taken many a class in which the teachers first words were, "Everyone starts with an A." We imagine the ideal and then we deduct points until either the summation moves into the red or some specific item is too difficult to accept and we reject out of hand--or they do the same to us.
I'd swear myself to have been involved with those who I would love despite any bad news, but the truth is that unconditional love is an imaginary model and that whatever discoveries I had made simply weren't disagreeable or shocking enough to push me ultimately over that line.
The truly unfortunate thing is when you're never given the opportunity to fall out of love with someone and you're forced to carry the burden of love when in fact all you probably needed was more time to get to know them so as to give up on them of your own accord.
It's possible to be in love with anyone, no matter how aware of their faults we are. In some cases, you do not truly love the person you are in love with, you love your image of them. I have loved people knowing full well how bad they were before, but I find it even easier to make excuses for the faults of others than for my own, as I can remain blissfully ignorant of their motivations and imagine them feeling whatever works best for me. It doesn't really matter when you are in love, that manic selflessness it can bring enough anaesthesia for the worst of it
