I haven't yet been to Vermont. The closest I have come geographically was visiting New Hampshire two years ago. Jodi and I backpacked in the snowy spring of the White Mountains. While the mountains are part of the same Appalachians to which the Virginia highlands belong, hiking there was like visiting exotic relatives of whom you have never met -- second cousins who live somewhere like Brazil.

Where we hiked seemed to be a fence between relatively civilized South and wild North. Passing north through "the Notches" revealed miles of pleasingly lumpy mountains that could have extended all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Hiking there meant trading sweat and fatigue for calm mountaintops far from the modern world (the catch, though, was that on the mountains we climbed, that modern world was still at the edge of vision -- in the form of the Bretton Woods center far below us).

I also enjoyed the names associated with the area: Amonoosic, Passaconaway, and others.
