"Why does it offend your ears to hear the words "One Nation, Under God" in the pledge of allegiance? If God is but a fairy tale to individuals like you and I, then isn't it the equivalent of swearing allegiance to the Tooth Fairy? If anything, in saying it we are respecting the views of our founding fathers when they established this country...a ( Read more... )

Again though, why does that actually matter? Does what's written on currency affect your life in any way? What would be accomplished if that phrase was removed ( ... )

Wrong. Freedom of religion was only one of the freedoms granted us in the constitution. This country is supposed to be based on freedom -- individual choice. Yes, state religion was a big factor for the choice of leaving Europe, and this is exactly why our wise fathers madated complete separation. Putting religion on federally-issued bank notes is not separation. It's another sign of the church controlling the rest of us -- which is exactly what religion has been used for for millennium. The original boogie-man.

If it's so trivial, then what is your objection to having the addition removed? Not contesting the status quo is what has eroded our freedoms and will continue to do so as long as those who claim, "What's the point?" are the loudest voices.

You say I'm wrong then contradict yourself by supporting my claim. Alrighty then.

I'm also not seeing how a sentence on a note is controlling us or (so dramatic) "eroding our freedoms"? In fact, the only thing I see religion dipping it's hand in these days is denial of rights for gays to marry, which has been overturned by judges in various states as unconstitutional (which, in fact is very unconstitutional). Tell me, how does the church control your life outside of that aspect?

And way to dodge a question with another question. I don't really care as much as I'm tired of hearing the blabbering of self righteous idiots squawking like some flock of Geese over some of the most trivial nonsense. Why not apply all that effort to something worthwhile that actually effects the people's lives rather than trying to abolish some minor annoyance.

How does what I said 'support your cliam'? You said this nation was founded on religion, and I said wrong. I granted that being required to belong to the same church as the queen was a large part of the reason people left Europe, but it was far from the only reason. British landing on American soil and the founding of our nation is not one and the same.

If that is the only thing you see religion dipping its hand in, then you are as blind as the masses. That, in itself, should enrage you. I said the statement on the note and the line in the Pledge of Allegiance are signs of the church controlling the state. You think making laws because religion does not recognize the true nature of the world is separation of church and state?

Accepting the small things paves the way to the larger erosion of freedom (such as that which took place in the wake of "9/11"). I did not dodge any question, you simply refuse to hear the answer. Whether you're being deliberately obtuse or just complacent is for you to decide.
