Good for you for posting this! I do this once a month. That's how I found out that one of our regular customers at my old job was a level III. Thankfully we don't have any living within a couple miles of our house.
My bigger concern are the ones who don't have places to live and could be anywhere. My uncles job is to find housing for sex offenders in my town. When they can't find them a place to live, they have to provide them with a sleeping bag and maybe a tent?(I can't remember if the tent was for sure). The offenders are supposed to give them a general idea of where they'll be camping out, but a lot of times they don't.
You can follow the directions in the site to get more detals on the offenders near you. For instance, in the Missouri site, you can choose "View the registered sex offenders by Zip code" and enter your zip code, and get a list of locals.

"sex offender registry" MYSTATE
(except write in your actual state, like Missouri, instead of MYSTATE.
You should get a list of links, at least one of which is the official government registry. For instance, this is the site for Missouri: http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSHPWeb/PatrolDivisions/CRID/SOR/SORPage.html

Hope that helps, and hi!
