“Thanks for coming over and helping me with the tractor, Ben,” Johnathan said as he clasped his longtime friend’s arms in a friendly male embrace.
“Anytime Johnathan,” Ben said as he pulled his tools out of the back of the truck. “How has Clark and Martha been? Has he been doing well in school?”
“Clark has…” Johnathan drifted off as he tried to find a way to not say what shouldn’t be said aloud, “Clark has been pretty quiet about school. Keeps to himself mostly. Think he does have a thing for Lana though if Brad didn’t keep getting in the way,” he said as he smiled at the looks that Clark always threw at Lana. That boy.
“That Brad’s a trouble-maker. Did you know he nearly destroyed my wheat last fall? He went and put out one of those crop circles on my wheat. Said that it wasn’t him though although the way he was acting, all smug told me otherwise.”
“I agree with you there. He’s picked on Clark a lot. It’s a good thing Clark’s as kind and mild-mannered as he is. I wouldn’t want to see my boy angry.”
Ben contemplated that thought as he shifted under the broken tractor, “It looks like one of the lines down here is dented closed. Could you hand me that 5/8 screwdriver. I’ll see if I have one in the back of my truck.”
Johnathan and Ben worked in companionable silence for a while, the camaraderie of two men working together before Johnathan broke the silence, “If something happened to me, would you come over here occasionally and check on Martha and my boy?”
Ben pulled himself out from under the tractor, “Now what in the blazes is that question for? Of course I will. Now I want to know why you ask,” Ben said as he wiped his hands free of the tractor oil and looked his friend in the face.
“Johnathan looked away for a bit and said, “You know I never was sent to war like you were. I was called up but after doing a physical on me they said I was too infirm to go. My heart apparently. As a man gets older he looks at his mortality differently. I want to make sure Martha has someone who cares for her watching over her and my boy has someone with a firm and clear moral compass to look to should he need it.”
Ben jolted as he realized that his affection for Martha was still very clear to his best friend and confidant, “I never…” Ben started before Johnathan cut him off.
“I know that, Ben,” Johnathan said firmly cutting off his friend. “You’ve been great about making sure that she is just a friend. I don’t want her to be alone is all.”
“All right, you’ve made your point,” Ben said slapping his friend on the back.
“Good. Now why don’t we go inside and see if that pie I’ve been smelling all day is cooled down,” Johnathan said as he patted his friend on the back in a manly embrace and closed the doors to the barn.
