A Losing Battle
He tried to convince himself that she was only his teammate and that his caring for her welfare was no different then him being concerned for anyone else on his team…
…yet it was her safety that always seemed to occupy his foremost thoughts and the mere idea of her in trouble sent chills rippling their way down his spine in an ice-cold fear.
He would try to tell himself that she was just a friend and he could almost make himself believe it…
…until she came into his view and he saw a smile light up her features and something deep inside him would clench at the sight and he would find himself smiling back in true, honest pleasure.
He could justify his defending of her to his superiors by declaring to himself that it was merely in his nature to not be able to stomach anyone being falsely accused or treatly unfairly...
...but that wouldn’t explain his deep seeded need for her to understand that he trusted her, had always trusted her, would always trust her no matter what anyone else might say...
...Nor did it explain how the momentary flash of hurt he glimpsed in her eyes could reach inside him and tear at his soul.
He could give reason to his actions by stating it was only mere attraction that he felt for her. She was a beautiful woman... but the simple fact that he was having an internal fight with himself trying to define his relationship with Teyla was proof enough that what was between them surpassed the simple, uncomplicated feelings that sheer attraction arose.
It was when the attraction was coupled with caring, trust, uncertainty and a myriad of other conflicting emotions that the truth became apparent.
Lt. Col. John Sheppard was fighting a losing battle but what he realized was the simple truth that he didn't want to win this particular fight.
He loved Teyla Emmagan.
And he would tell her.
