Summary: The real reason John decided to go to Atlantis.
It started with a chair.
Then progressed to a table.
'Major,' Rodney said as the meeting adjourned, and his new source of information on the ATA gene stood to leave the room. 'Could I have a minute?'
The man looked startled, as if he wasn't used to being the focus of anyone's attention.
'Uh, sure,' he replied, and crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe. Elizabeth shot Rodney a questioning glance as she followed General O'Neill out of the briefing room, and the Major received an almost identical one from Colonel Sumner - but with more malice.
'I won't keep you long,' said Rodney quickly, 'since I know you're flying General O'Neill back, but I was hoping that before we leave you could come into the lab and -'
Sheppard's expression darkened slightly, then he flushed. 'Oh, well, I don't think I'm going to be going.'
Rodney was sure his jaw dropped. 'You're joking.'
The major just started to laugh. 'Actually, I'm not. It's Dr. McKay, right? Well, sorry I can't help you in your lab, but I don't think this Stargate stuff is for me.'
The idea that someone this naturally, unfairly gifted could just turn away from the biggest adventure of his life, when someone like Rodney was actually aching to go, well, it absolutely bewildered him.
'I'm afraid that's just not acceptable, Major,' said Rodney.
Sheppard was halfway out of the room, but stopped dead in his tracks, and turned.
'What?' he asked, as if he hadn't heard Rodney perfectly well.
Rodney only smiled, and pushed past him. 'You'll go. Because I know your type, Major. You can't resist a challenge - and this program is the biggest challenge you'll ever face.'
He could have sworn that as he left the room he heard an amused tone murmur, 'I can think of a bigger one.'
