Sean nodded, opening his mouth to say something, but he couldn't think of anything that didn't sound defensive or whining. Instead he met David's eyes for a long moment, thinking I'm sorry. He sighed, and concentrated on getting into the bathroom without tripping, the thought of a shower pulling him along. He started the water and stood in front of the stall, blank and staring, as the water poured out. Finally he shook himself, and stepped in ( ... )

"Sit," David said, and although his voice remained soft, he realized that he probably should've added a please to it as Sean's expression tipped from tiredness into something else he couldn't read well, hidden by the duck of his head as he sat. David edged the tray toward him. Soup, tea, toast, a tiny dish of canned fruit in syrup--all things easy on a stomach that hadn't had much lately. David took a step back and hitched himself up onto the back of the sofa; there really wasn't anywhere else for him to sit, and he didn't want to sit on the floor. "Thank you," he said, and Sean's dark-ringed eyes shifted back upward to him again. "I know you're probably angry with me right now." Anyone else, it wouldn't have bothered him, but this was Sean, and so it did, a little. "And that's fine. Feel free to yell at me after you've eaten and rested ( ... )

"Not angry," Sean mumbled, shifting the coat into a better position. It smelled of David, the soap they used, and a warm male scent that was wholly him. Sean sucked in a breath, pushing down the stab of loneliness. I miss him. I miss what we had. The problem was, he felt the exact same way about Cris. He stared at the tray, not feeling any hungrier than he had in the past week. "You were just doing your job," he said, and reached for the spoon. "If Lakshman had his way, I'd not be allowed back, so. Thank you." He swirled the spoon in the soup, trying to spark some interest in the food, but none came. He lifted a spoonful up and ate, hoping a taste would help, but he felt the same lack of hunger, of interest in food he'd had for the last week. He could feel David's eyes on him, though, so he took another spoonful, knowing he couldn't simply sluff it off like he'd been doing. He ate, slowly but steadily, until the soup was gone, and then glanced up at David ( ... )

David folded his hands together, because fucking hell, he wanted to touch. For a moment he almost wished that Cris' return had meant the loss of the memories he'd built with Sean, but no, he honestly didn't want that, either. He let his eyes slide over Sean's mouth, curved in a tiny smile, down his throat, over the vee of pale smooth skin revealed by the gap of his lab coat. No, he didn't want to forget, but he couldn't help but wish the memories would lose a little of their immediacy ( ... )

"True," Sean admitted, and took a small bite of the toast. He still had no urge at all to eat, but he knew it was probably due to overtaxing himself, and stress. "And thanks again. I'm...glad I have someone looking out for me." He sipped at the tea, alternating until the toast was gone, and reached for the can of fruit. The taste was cloyingly sweet after so long without food, but he ate, taking small bites and trying to savor it. By the last bit, he was enjoying it, and licked unconsciously at a drop of syrup clinging to his lips ( ... )
