Bates surveyed the area around the gate with a suspicious eye, but nothing immediately popped out at him as dangerous. There were trees, of course, but there always were. The question was what lurked beyond those trees. Not if, of course. There was always something lurking.
Rodney took a glance around to make sure there was nothing immediately threatening his well-being, and then he pulled out a handheld scanner and started spinning it around, looking for any forms of energy he could find.
The weather wasn't so bad, it was about 22 degrees and there was a slight breeze, but there was no sign yet of any major technology. He sighed and looked up to Lorne, ready to follow wherever he might go. Unless it was into certain danger and death.
"Nice day for it," Bates commented. He waited a few moments for something awful to happen, or perhaps an ominous silence, but the sun kept shining and the birds kept chirping happily.
Rodney snorted at Lorne's optimism at being able to cover two miles in no time at all. Maybe on his normal missions they could cover that, but Rodney had never had an easy mission to date, and he wasn't sure his luck was going to change right now.
"So, two miles, and we're at the ruins?" Most likely any tech they'd find would be there, or on the way.
