There were a few comments on one of The Magdalene's LJ posts, in regards to promotion these days and the unfortunate demise of boards like Kaos. And it got me thinking (or reminiscing?).
I totally agree that it is a shame about the untimely rot of boards like Kaos, Club Bizzare etc etc as not only were they, and their predecessors, great places to ( Read more... )

Case in point: Kaos only stirs from it's decomposition when deathboy returns for a visit.

Those forums were great for promoting events to a wider range of people than you actually knew in-person ... AND for the occasional and highly entertaining flamewar :)

But, I think on the whole most of us have "grown-up" and no longer need to prove just how übergoth we are ... we just are! ;)

Yeah, but how Uber is someone really, if no one comes to their gigs? Cause no one comes if no one knows about that there's an uber gig to come too.
And if the boards are as dead as George Bush's reputation, who is there to promote too?

Forums can be a waste of time if they are not there for an initial purpose. LOLKATZ or whatever the fuck aside. The Kaos forum was a flame forum. Sorry folks, its main purpose ended up being to annoy and piss people off. Funny that when that stopped so did everything else.

Myspace, Facebook have killed the need for forums to a certain extent. When you can send a flyer or message or invite etc etc to everybody on your list, why bother posting it in a forum where people may see it.

"who know enough people...etc" and herein lies the problem. By utilising sites like Facebook or Myspace, you are only reaching the people that you already know. And most of them WONT run off to tell all their mates that there's some gig on in the weekend or what not.
The internet opened up the scene for a lot of people who otherwise would be outside of the loop. And forums were (traditionally) a way for complete strangers to touch base over similar interests.

So what about all the people we don't already know, who love live music and have wads of daddies cash to toss about?

they're all on PunkAs.com

everyone joins that forum sooner or later.

some even stay for the loals.

But if you're not PUNK it's pretty much a waste of time.

Case in point my blathering about the comp and the gig on there and only getting replies from either no-one or people who are playing at said gig.

I think most goths these days have either moved on or found the joy that is livejournal...

well i've managed to promote my unPUNK shows and picnics on there no problem...and once you've been on there long enough you realise that there are quite a few people that don't actually listen to punk at all.

Cos they stayed for the loals.

:)
