Awesome turnout at my pick-up (from scratch!) promotion party tonight! Everybody from the Ambassador on down showed up, including the second-ranking British diplomat and some of our local neighbors I was able to reach out to through Facebook ( Read more... )

Way to go. Back in Baghdad at the new Embassy complex with TC.
Wow, it's big. I can't WAIT to be stationed there and have the perimeter...during 'rainy season'...at night.

It's interesting being back tho, I have to say. Bumped into two SF buds, working in the embassy or 'attached'. Haven't seen one since we graduated the Q-Course in 79 together and the other I lost track of when I PCS'd out of Tolz in 86. Back in that 'small world' mode again.

Thanks! I hadn't even gotten to my desk and logged-on yesterday morning when Madam Atomic was already calling me with the news. And the 'congrats' emails were already trickling in from everywhere in the world where they get to the office before we do, so it was a nice way to start the day, especially a day on which I was, technically, on leave, but come in anyway to go to the weekly staff meeting.

We're still trying to deal with all the poor design decisions in my own new embassy compound. It'll take us/them years to fix all the bad moves.

Bad Tolz? I've driven through the town, back in early 2007 on my way from Berchtesgarten to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but all the official Amis are long gone from there. I know the SF Group was there for many, many years.

There was a bit of that last night, and of course I was ambushed into saying a few words.

Mercifully few, then back to operating the blender.

I was admiring your cabinetry/bookshelves. I see a lot of familiar bookspines there, many Baen titles I recognize from my own shelves, that travel around the world with me.
