Netbook

Nov 09, 2009 13:06

So I'm looking at getting a netbook. The laptop I have now is bulky, old, and on it's last legs (the AC adapter connection is fucked up so it's constantly losing the power connection). I don't need a portable design workstation. I just want something that's good for watching videos, browsing the web, maybe some poker, and is lightweight, has ( Read more... )

Eh, they're all basically identical with different shells. Grace just picked up the lenovo s10-2 (6-cell battery, win7) this weekend actually :P

So, just play with them at the store for the look/feel of it, as there's not really much compelling difference between them all.

Well... they are identical to a point. One of the reasons I like that Asus 1005HA-P is that with the six cell battery the battery life is rated at 10.5 hours and it still only weighs about 2.9 pounds. The HA-V version is rated at 8.5 hours.

From what I can find online, the Lenovo s10-2 is rated at 6 hours and is 4.3 pounds.

Four and a half hours and the extra weight seems significant enough for me to be swayed one way or the other.

I somehow doubt that rated battery life to be honest (and looking around it seems to hover around 7-8 in real life usage), and that extra 1lb is not a deal breaker.

The overall aesthetics of it is what I rather care about especially with such a tiny thing (it'd be pointless to me if I couldn't really use the keyboard, etc.).

Though, obviously I don't care much about them since I returned mine and got a tv instead :P

my friend got the 1000he and he is very satisfied with it. So i'm pretty sure the other asus eee's are pretty good, too.

so far so good on my test run today at starbucks...2 hours w/ wifi usage and i still have a hefty portion of battery life. I like the layout of my keyboard and have no problems as of yet typing on it.

I'd definitely go see them since the specs seem around the same for all to see how you like the feel of the keyboard and the touchpads are significantly different for the various models...just see what you like/are comfy with and go with it :O

while the sony one was total hawtness, I couldn't justify the extra 150 for it :/ but my lenovo is quite the looker :) Not too heavy considering the 6cell battery and that I'm carrying it around in a handbag :)

I recommend the HP netbooks, they're very high quality I've found and I have a couple coworkers that use them as their standard work machines when mobile.

Also - agreed with the above post to check the keyboard before you buy one. I can't stand netbooks because all their keyboards are too small for my fingers, I find typing to be too frustrating. 12" ultra-compact notebooks are about as small as I can stand, keyboard-wise.

Mmm not based on what I've seen. From what I can tell they all have the integrated Intel GMA something or other. If they do make one with a dedicated video card it'd probably make the price jump considerably. I'm not worried about it though. The most gaming I'd do on this thing would be poker.

How about gaming on emulators? :D

Heh I suppose I could do that as well :P Though I doubt I would. I've never really enjoyed playing emulators. Mainly because if I want to play a SNES game or whatever, I want an actual controller. Same reason why I don't play emulators on my jailbroken iPhone. I installed an SNES emulator and played around with it for a while, and it works just fine, but I still just need those actual buttons.
