i solved my quandry of which of two good nights (dead & buried or slaughterhaus 5) to go to last night by winding myself up into a lousy mood, and staying home instead. drank a bottle of crap red wine and watched qi and the book quiz on bbc i player. i rawk.

I'm almost drunk enough to post my uber-geeky opinion piece on why the film is much more awful than it objectively is. But I might just carry on drinking. After all, what is vodka for?

But I feel your pain regarding the squid. And don't get me started on the music...

well, it should have been holy-fuck-awesome, and it should (as a film) have attempted to have a life of its own. it doesn't have anywhere near the impact of the book because the last dozen or so super-hero films released have been heading in this direction. a lot of complaints about watchmen seem to be that it doesn't do the "tortured superhero" thing nearly as well as the last two batmans (batmen?) or even the x-men trilogy! which entirely misses the point that those storylines wouldn't have been concieved of without the legacy of alan moore's work (including the neglected (in this country at least) swamp thing ( ... )

i was about 50-50 on expecting a total disaster, so was quite pleased it wasn't. and i totally agree on veidt. plus manhattan's voice got quite camp and high-pitched every so often, which was quite odd...

i'd been following the development of the film. i read somewhere that alternate-ending screenings had taken place because the giant squid ending was seen as "too weird" or whatever. then i'm sure i read a couple of reviews where they said the ending was faithful to the comic. i guess it is in substance, but who wants that at the finale of a comic book movie?!

i think the "black freighter" stuff is being released separately. or maybe there'll be a many-disced box set. i was kind of miffed that the relationship of the newsstand guy and the kid was totally left out until they hugged in the explosion scene...
